The 8 Best Cabinet Paints That Ensure a Beautiful, Long-Lasting Finish

The article explores the considerations and recommendations for selecting the best paint for kitchen cabinets, emphasizing durability and ease of cleaning as primary factors. Instead of fully replacing cabinets during a kitchen renovation, painting them along with new hardware can offer a cost-effective and transformative DIY project. Architectural color consultant Amy Wax stresses the importance of using products specifically designed for cabinets. Key considerations when choosing cabinet paint include the paint's base and finish. Various paint bases, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages, are discussed. Oil-based paint is often favored for its hardness and durability, which makes it suitable for high-wear areas. It also possesses self-leveling properties that minimize brush strokes, resulting in a smoother finish. However, a drawback is its tendency to yellow or warm in color over time. Latex paint, while quick-drying and easy to apply with stable colors, is thinner and may reveal imperfections or brush strokes. Alkyd paint, similar to oil-based, offers durability, fast drying, and a smooth finish without fading, making it ideal for high-traffic kitchens. Acrylic paint provides a harder finish, maintaining color and durability, and can withstand high temperatures without cracking, beneficial for cabinets near stovetops. The paint finish is another crucial aspect, as cabinets require a finish that is both durable and easy to clean. Satin and semi-gloss finishes are recommended. Satin, or low luster, offers a less reflective sheen while still providing a sealed and protected, easy-to-clean surface. Semi-gloss, with its higher sheen, is more reflective and tends to make cabinets appear cleaner. The article then details eight specific paint products recommended for cabinets, highlighting their unique benefits and features. These include Benjamin Moore Advance Interior Paint, praised for its durable, non-yellowing, furniture-like finish; BEHR Hybrid Urethane Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel Paint, which combines oil-based durability with water-based ease of use and professional leveling; and Farrow & Ball Wood Primer & Undercoat, designed for wood cabinets to create a smooth, protective base. Further recommendations include Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, a water-based enamel that resists yellowing and provides a hard, durable finish; Beyond Paint All-in-One Refinishing Paint for Cabinets, an acrylic-based option requiring no stripping or priming; Benjamin Moore INSL-X Specialty Coatings, known for its super smooth, durable urethane-acrylic formula; BEHR Alpenglow Semi-Gloss Enamel Low Odor Interior Paint & Primer, an acrylic base with mildew and stain resistance; and Valspar Satin Base Cabinet and Furniture Paint Enamel, an oil-enriched enamel that dries to a smooth, factory-like finish resistant to fading and scratching. The article concludes with frequently asked questions, advising on the importance of high-quality paint, the necessity of sanding before painting to ensure adhesion, and the benefits of spray painting for a smooth, professional finish, especially for cabinets with intricate designs.
