The 7 Best Doormats We Tested Keep Your Entry Clean in Style

This article details the selection of the seven best doormats based on extensive testing by Better Homes & Gardens. Doormats, often overlooked, are presented as crucial elements for maintaining clean floors and enhancing entryway aesthetics. The testing process involved evaluating various doormats in real-world conditions, including exposure to sun, rain, dirt from pets and urban environments, and daily foot traffic. Key performance indicators such as absorption level, drying time, slip resistance, backing quality, and size were meticulously assessed over a six-month period. The SlipToGrip Universal Doormat was chosen as the 'Best Overall' due to its functional design, low-profile fit, effective dirt trapping capabilities, and durable polypropylene material. Despite a longer drying time of approximately six hours, its understated appearance and consistent performance made it suitable for most households, particularly in utility areas. The 'Best Budget' pick, the All Modern Park Non-Slip Striped Doormat, offered a stylish coir option with a bold stripe pattern. While its durability was rated moderate and it exhibited typical coir shedding, its aesthetic appeal and affordability made it a good choice for entries with minimal element exposure. For pet owners, the Muddy Mat Microfiber Door Mat was recognized as the 'Best for Dogs' for its exceptional ability to trap sand and dirt from dog paws. This microfiber mat proved highly absorbent, easy to clean, and remained stable in high-traffic indoor locations. Its machine-washable nature and range of sizes and colors further contribute to its appeal, though its outdoor longevity was noted as a potential limitation. The West Elm Half Moon Layered Blocks Doormat earned the 'Best Colorful' title, praised for its vibrant geometric design and high-quality appearance that belied its price. Ideal for light to moderate traffic indoors, it provided an aesthetic boost without compromising on functionality, effectively brushing off loose debris. The L.L.Bean Everyspace Recycled Waterhog Doormat was highlighted as the 'Best Indoor/Outdoor' option for its robust design, including a raised edge and 3D pattern that efficiently trapped water and mud. Made from recycled polyester and rubber, this mat demonstrated exceptional durability and ease of cleaning, holding up against heavy use by multiple family members and pets. Its higher price point was justified by its superior performance and extensive customization options. The Letterfolk Tile Mat was chosen as the 'Best Tile' for its unique customizable design featuring removable, dishwasher-safe hexagon tiles, allowing for seasonal or trend-based aesthetic changes. While more decorative than highly functional for heavy messes, its vintage-inspired look and weatherproof vinyl construction offered versatility. Finally, the Grandin Road Monogrammed Doormat was selected as the 'Best Personalized' option. This heavy-duty coir mat, featuring a classic black border and single-letter monogram, showcased impressive quality and durability, resisting fraying and discoloration even with sun exposure and light foot traffic on a covered porch. The article also provides a detailed guide on what to consider before purchasing a doormat, including dimensions, shape, material types (coir, rubber, polyester), and care instructions. Expert advice from Carlin Van Noppen, CEO and head interior designer of Fig Linens and Home, and Cristina Martinez, founder and lead designer of Cristina Isabel Design, underscores the importance of choosing a doormat that aligns with climate, traffic levels, and aesthetic preferences. Additional doormats that were tested but did not make the top list, such as the IKEA Lohals Door Mat, DII Rubber Doormat, and Mohawk Home Ornamental Brick Door Mat, are also reviewed, outlining their pros and cons. The piece concludes by addressing common questions regarding doormat cost, lifespan, and the recommended number of doormats for a home.
