The 7 Best Blankets of 2025 - Wool, Fleece & Cotton Blankets | Reviews by Wirecutter

This comprehensive guide, authored by Jackie Reeve, Wirecutter's bed and bath writer, details the extensive research and testing conducted to identify the best blankets for various needs and seasons. Over 500 hours were dedicated to evaluating 44 blankets, culminating in recommendations for seven top-performing options. The article emphasizes that a superior blanket is not only warm but also breathable, soft, stylish, and built for longevity. These selections are designed to serve as a primary top layer in warmer months or an additional insulating layer under a comforter during colder periods. The author's expertise, derived from years of researching and testing home textiles and her personal passion for quilting, underpins the selection process. Key criteria for evaluation included comfort, ensuring blankets are soft and breathable without causing overheating; durability, with a focus on items that can withstand regular use and repeated washing; consistent availability from manufacturers; ease of maintenance, prioritizing machine-washable options; a neat and clean aesthetic on the bed, including generous sizing for proper drape; and a fair price point supported by strong return policies and customer support. The testing methodology involved measuring and examining blankets out of the package, performing multiple wash and dry cycles to assess shrinkage and material integrity, sleeping under each blanket, and conducting wear tests with children and pets to simulate real-world conditions. The recommendations span diverse materials and weaves to cater to different preferences. The Garnet Hill Plush-Loft Blanket is highlighted as the top choice for a super soft and lofty feel, offering exceptional warmth and coziness, particularly suitable for fall and winter. Its quilted sateen top and plush polyester back, combined with a fluffy polyester fill, make it a family favorite known for its durability and resistance to pilling. Despite being the smallest queen size among the picks, its comfort and resilience are highly praised, though its bulkiness in larger sizes may require a trip to a laundromat. The L.L.Bean Wicked Cozy Blanket is recommended for its fluffy, luxurious fleece, noted for being softer, more breathable, and less staticky than other polyester fleece options. Ideal for those who often feel cold, it provides rapid warmth and is easy to wash and dry without significant shrinkage. For an heirloom-quality option, the Coyuchi Pebbled Handstitched Organic Quilt stands out with its hand-embroidered, GOTS-certified organic cotton. This versatile quilt, inspired by traditional kantha quilts, is suitable for year-round use and develops a unique character after washing, though its price point is higher. The Faribault Mill Pure & Simple Wool Blanket is presented as a classic, washable wool option. Despite its light feel, it offers substantial warmth and a pleasantly coarse texture that is not irritating to sensitive skin. Its ability to maintain quality and even improve in appearance after washing makes it a durable choice. The L.L.Bean Maine Twill Blanket, a classic, weightier cotton blanket, is praised for its soft feel, clean aesthetic, and remarkable durability, enduring years of use without significant wear. Lastly, the Boll & Branch Waffle Blanket, made from organic cotton, is recognized for its luxurious, springy feel and breathable open weave, making it a great year-round option for moderate climates, albeit prone to snagging. The Riley Textured Cotton Coverlet offers a lightweight, breathable option, perfect for summer with its laid-back ribbed texture and a combination of thick cotton and gauze for durability and airflow. The guide also delves into care and maintenance tips, stressing the importance of following washing instructions to preserve blanket longevity. Furthermore, it includes a section on other commendable blankets, such as the Garnet Hill Isa Stonewashed Organic-Cotton Blanket for an all-gauze option and Rest’s Evercool Cooling Comforter for its unique cooling properties, noting its specific use case for individual sleepers who prefer direct skin contact. A comprehensive competition section details why other tested blankets did not make the top recommendations, covering gauze, coverlets, chunky knits, heavier cottons, wool, quilts, fleece, and loft blankets, providing context on their shortcomings in terms of comfort, durability, or practicality.
