The 3 Best Smart Sprinkler Timers of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

Smart sprinkler timers offer a solution for optimizing in-ground irrigation systems, saving water, and maintaining healthy lawns and gardens. These devices replace traditional timers, leveraging smartphone apps to control watering schedules and adapt to local weather conditions. Key features include automatic optimization based on weather data, soil type, and yard topography, as well as remote control capabilities and integration with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home. The Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller is identified as the top pick, praised for its extensive features and user-friendly app. It supports various zone configurations (four, eight, and sixteen zones) and offers flexible watering options: Fixed for consistent routines, Flex Monthly for seasonal adjustments, and Flex Daily for dynamic, weather-dependent optimization. The Rachio 3 is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri Shortcuts, and Google Home, and can continue existing schedules during Wi-Fi outages. An optional weatherproof housing is available for outdoor installation. The primary drawback is its higher price point compared to some competitors, and it lacks two-factor authentication. The Orbit B-hyve XR Smart Indoor/Outdoor Sprinkler Timer is the runner-up, recognized for its durable hardware and highly customizable zone controls. This model features a weatherproof design suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation, supporting eight or sixteen watering zones. It utilizes local weather data and detailed yard information for optimized watering. While its app provides comprehensive customization, it is noted for being less intuitive and potentially confusing. It supports Amazon Alexa and Google Home and includes physical buttons for basic on-device control. Similar to Rachio, it also lacks two-factor authentication, and data sharing with third parties is a concern, though users can opt out of certain ad tracking. For budget-conscious consumers, the Orbit B-hyve Smart Indoor Irrigation Controller offers a cost-effective solution. This model provides a similar feature set to the B-hyve XR, including advanced app settings and automatic adjustments based on weather, but is designed for indoor installation and smaller yards with four or eight zones. Its lower price stems from the absence of weatherproofing, smaller status displays, and a different power adapter wiring process. The same app-related criticisms apply as with the B-hyve XR. Privacy concerns are also identical. The Hunter Hydrawise HPC-400 Outdoor Irrigation Controller is presented as an upgrade pick due to its exceptional scalability. Starting as a four-zone timer, it can be expanded up to 32 zones with additional plug-in modules, making it suitable for large or growing irrigation systems. It boasts robust weatherproof housing with a built-in lock and extensive on-device controls. While its app covers basic functions, it notably lacks alerts for system start and stop times. Compatibility is limited to Amazon Alexa. Privacy involves the collection of usage statistics and personal information, with an option for data subject requests. When choosing a smart sprinkler timer, several factors are crucial: whether to DIY or hire a professional for installation, ensuring the device supports the required number of watering zones, verifying compatibility with in-ground sprinkler systems only, and confirming adequate Wi-Fi range. All recommended models are WaterSense-certified by the EPA, ensuring at least 20% more water efficiency than non-smart timers. The testing methodology involved installing and configuring each device, evaluating app intuitiveness, voice control integration, connectivity reliability, and overall performance in controlling and optimizing watering schedules.
