The 2 Best Air Mattresses of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter

The article evaluates air mattresses, a common temporary sleeping solution, identifying key criteria for selection and recommending top models. It emphasizes that while no air mattress can fully replicate the comfort of a traditional bed, certain features contribute significantly to a better user experience. The primary reasons for choosing an air mattress typically include ease of storage, portability, and affordability, making them suitable for small living spaces, occasional guests, or temporary living arrangements. Rigorous testing involved researching dozens of options and hands-on evaluation of seven air mattresses. The testing process focused on models with built-in electric pumps for convenient inflation and deflation, an inflated height of at least 18 inches to mimic a standard bed, portability (under 25 pounds), good customer service, a minimum one-year warranty, and a reasonable price point under $150. Initial tests involved inflating mattresses and placing 125 pounds of weights on them for eight hours to account for vinyl stretching. Subsequent tests included overnight stays by adults and children, timing inflation/deflation, assessing pump noise, and checking for overnight deflation. Long-term air retention was also evaluated by leaving finalists inflated for 24 to 48 hours. The SoundAsleep Dream Series Air Mattress (queen) is identified as the top pick, having consistently performed well since 2016. Its key advantages include reliable air retention, supportive comfort, quiet operation of its built-in pump, and excellent customer service with a "no questions asked" warranty policy. The mattress also features an automatic shutoff for its pump to prevent overheating and has a flocked top to prevent sheets from slipping. It is available in various sizes and weighs less than 19 pounds, enhancing its portability. Minor drawbacks include potential creaking with multiple sleepers, a somewhat cumbersome internal cord storage, and occasional difficulty repacking into its tote bag. The King Koil Luxury Air Mattress Queen (20-inch) is recommended as the runner-up. This model excels in mimicking a traditional coil mattress feel and demonstrated impressive air retention for up to 48 hours without reinflation. It boasts a higher weight capacity of 600 pounds and slightly more generous dimensions than the SoundAsleep. The King Koil also features a flocked top and sides for secure sheet placement and includes a built-in elevated "pillow." However, its customer service experience is less established than SoundAsleep's, and the built-in pillow may not suit all users or limit placement options due to outlet proximity. The pump, while faster, is louder, and its separate inflate/deflate knobs are less intuitive. Another option considered is the Intex Deluxe Ultra Plush, noted for its inflatable headboard and reasonable air retention, though its pump is loud, and its storage bag may be less durable. The article also provides essential tips for air mattress care, such as pre-stretching the material, avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations during storage, and using mattress toppers for added comfort and insulation. It stresses that air mattresses are not meant for permanent use and advises on finding and patching leaks, a common issue, often solvable with readily available patch kits or through warranty claims for larger damages. Ultimately, the choice depends on balancing comfort, reliability, specific features, and manufacturer support.
