The 11 Odor Eliminators We Tested and Actually Love for Every Bad Smell

This comprehensive guide highlights the top 11 odor eliminators on the market, rigorously tested by The Spruce to effectively combat various household smells. The article emphasizes the importance of selecting odor eliminators that truly neutralize odors rather than merely masking them, a key distinction identified during testing. An expert, Marilee Nelson, co-founder of Branch Basics, underscores the significance of ingredient quality, advocating for products that not only eliminate smells but also enhance air quality. The Moso Natural Air Purifying Bag is recognized as the best overall choice. This unscented bag, filled with bamboo-activated carbon, effectively neutralizes odors in spaces up to 90 square feet and boasts a two-year lifespan, requiring only monthly sun exposure for rejuvenation. Its versatility makes it suitable for various areas, including cars, closets, and pet zones, and it is safe for individuals with scent sensitivities and pets. The Pura Mini earned the runner-up position, offering continuous, app-controlled scenting with adjustable intensity settings and a wide array of fragrance options. Its smart features, including scheduling and night light functionality, enhance its appeal, though it requires cartridge refills. For all-purpose use, the Fresh Wave Odor Removing Gel stands out. This user-friendly gel, formulated with plant oils, eradicates odors for up to 60 days over a 200-square-foot area, neutralizing smells from pets, cooking, and basements. Despite an initial strong aroma, it gradually dissipates. The Arm & Hammer Moisture Absorber & Odor Eliminator Tub is recommended for closets, effectively absorbing musty odors and excess moisture to prevent mildew, with its baking soda beads lasting up to 60 days. The Azuna Air Freshener and Odor Eliminator, a plant-based gel, allows users to control scent intensity and comes in an attractive, reusable jar, making it ideal for consistent, pleasant room ambiance. It offers various scents and refills but is not designed for fast-acting odor removal. Specific solutions are also provided for targeted odor problems. The Febreze Fabric Extra-Strength Odor-Eliminating Refresher is highly effective for fabric upholstery, neutralizing odors with its patented, phthalate-free technology, though its scent can be intense. For refrigerators, the Ellis Harper Fridge Ninja Deodorizer, containing charcoal, efficiently removes food odors and controls humidity, lasting up to a year with periodic sun recharging. The Poo-Pourri Before-You-Go Toilet Spray is the best for bathrooms, creating a barrier on toilet water to prevent odors from emerging, and is available in multiple essential oil-based scents, with each bottle providing up to 70 uses. For laundry, Lysol Laundry Sanitizer is praised for its ability to eliminate odors, particularly from gym clothes and musty towels, in a single wash, using a bleach-free formula. Lastly, Dr. Scholl's Odor-X Ultra Odor-Fighting Foot Powder is recommended for shoes, offering effective, light-scented odor and wetness control, despite a potentially messy application. The article emphasizes that proper odor elimination involves understanding the source of smells and choosing the right product type—sprays for quick fixes, gels for continuous action, bags for passive absorption, and plug-ins for consistent fragrance. It also advises consumers to pay close attention to ingredients, favoring natural options like activated charcoal, essential oils, and enzymes, and to consult resources like EWG Skin Deep for toxicity ratings, especially for products used around children and pets. Stationary odor eliminators should be kept out of reach of children and pets. The Spruce's testing methodology involved real-life application and evaluation of effectiveness, scent, and value.
