The Pleats project, a modern courtyard home in Phoenix, Arizona, draws inspiration from the saguaro cactus, a distinctive plant native to the Sonoran Desert. Designed by The Ranch Mine, a Phoenix-based architecture firm known for its urban desert living designs, and built by Boxwell Homes, the 1,850-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bathroom house was completed in August 2019. The homeowners, who discovered the urban lot in 2007, sought a space that fostered togetherness, solitude, entertainment, and meditation, emphasizing critical indoor-outdoor living. The home's design incorporates several elements that pay homage to the saguaro cactus. Its name, "Pleats," is derived from the corrugated metal wrapping the exterior, which mimics the cactus's pleated surface. This material was chosen for its durability and radiant heat management, crucial in the intense Arizona climate. Cavin Costello, principal architect at The Ranch Mine, noted that the region's climate and geography, combined with the clients' love for the desert, were primary inspirations for the home's exterior. A new gabled volume on the west side of the front elevation further reflects the saguaro. It features a custom hemlock wood slat pattern resembling the cactus's forked ribs, and a recessed entry that evokes a "saguaro boot," the cavities used by desert animals for shelter. The architects added this gabled roof to provide shade in the courtyard from the intense Arizona sun and to offer an open, indoor-outdoor great room with mountain views, seamlessly connecting the kitchen, living, and dining areas to an exterior patio. White stucco was used for the original structure, which was retained and forms the south-facing gable where an outdoor shower is located. The clients requested a blend of mid-century modern, industrial, and modern European interior design styles. The Ranch Mine integrated European-style hardware, fixtures, and appliances in the kitchen, alongside walnut cabinetry, accent lighting, and furniture for a mid-century modern aesthetic. Concrete floors in the living spaces and stainless steel countertops contribute to an industrial feel. Two large sliders with transom windows provide an indoor-outdoor connection in the great room, complemented by a perforated metal patio cover that offers both shade and natural light. An L-shaped layout positions the master bedroom adjacent to the exterior courtyard, offering direct access to a private oasis with a small rectangular pool and fire pit area. The master bathroom continues the contemporary style with warm wood accents, featuring sleek wood cabinetry for the floating double vanity, hexagonal cement tiles, sphere accent lights, and rounded-corner mirrors. The main house also includes a mudroom with laundry facilities and an exterior door leading to a fenced outdoor shower, used for washing pets or rinsing off before swimming. Pavers from the outdoor shower create a path to the detached garage, which is clad in the same dark corrugated metal as the main volume. The garage provides space for vehicles, outdoor gear, and a workshop for the owners' skincare business. Situated on a rugged peninsula along the Pacific Ocean, the house's layout follows the natural topography, aligning with the cliff face and forming sheltered garden courtyards that provide protection from the elements. The site features existing cypress trees and a ravine, which the house integrates into its design. The residence is conceptually divided into two main sections by the ravine. One side hosts a traditional Japanese entrance pavilion, known as a genkan, while the other contains the primary living spaces of the main house. These two parts are connected by a glass-enclosed bridge that spans the ravine, creating a dynamic transition and offering framed views of the surrounding landscape, thus enhancing the connection between the inhabitants and their natural environment. The design emphasizes orchestrated movement through the house to continually present residents with views of nature. Rising two levels, the home is oriented to the west to maximize panoramic views of the ocean. In contrast, the eastern portion of the structure is partially embedded into the site, housing more private and sheltered rooms. A central kitchen features a sculptural island with organic forms, complementing the natural aesthetic of the home, and adjoins a terrace and an infinity pool, further blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. A narrow footbridge, mounted on steel rails, can rotate around the entire structure. This movement is facilitated by solar-driven gear motors that allow for variable speeds, enabling a range of pattern creation. Attached to this rotating bridge are thirteen adjustable rods and tubes. These components can be positioned at different heights and angles, and as the bridge rotates, they drag through the gravel, forming intricate patterns. This area, located 15 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, is characterized by its volcanic origins, which have resulted in mineral-rich land and a storied history influenced by various cultures and historical events. The design of Casa Caldera directly responds to these influences, emphasizing sustainability and integration with the landscape. The dwelling's construction material, scoria—a porous, lightweight red volcanic aggregate—is integral to its design and performance. This basaltic lava was mixed into a semi-fluid state and pressed into formwork, a technique similar to rammed earth construction, allowing the walls to be self-supporting. This choice of material not only provides excellent thermal insulation due to its 18-inch thickness but also ensures the structure visually blends into its volcanic surroundings. The 880-square-foot home's layout is informed by local architectural typologies, specifically the "zaguan," a central hallway or passage. This design choice addresses the clients' request for both outdoor living and sleeping zones, organizing the interior space efficiently. The house features a rectangular plan divided into three zones: living accommodations and sleeping quarters flank the central zaguan. Large folding metal doors at both ends of the zaguan allow the covered living space to open up to the surrounding landscape, promoting natural light and cross-ventilation. When closed, these partitions offer security and protection. This flexible design allows the central volume to serve multiple functions, from lounging and dining to an additional sleeping area. Heating within the dwelling is provided solely by a wood-burning stove and a fireplace, maintaining the off-grid ethos. Cooling relies on the natural thermal mass of the thick scoria walls and passive airflow, which is managed through strategically placed external operable windows. These windows are intentionally small to minimize direct solar heat gain during the hot summer months, reflecting a careful consideration of solar orientation to optimize indoor comfort without reliance on active cooling systems.
