Soma smart shades review: Retrofitting your blinds for Google Assistant requires many compromises

The Soma smart shades system offers a solution for automating natural light in a home by retrofitting existing window coverings. Unlike smart bulbs or switches, smart shades are less common and often require replacing entire shade units or their motors. Soma provides a battery-powered Bluetooth controller that pulls on the existing shade cord, with an optional solar panel for continuous power and a WiFi-connecting bridge for voice assistant compatibility. Key advantages of the Soma system include its functional operation in raising and lowering shades, the utility of the solar panel in eliminating the need for manual charging, and its compatibility with Google Home, Alexa, and HomeKit via the Soma Connect bridge. Through voice commands, users can adjust shades to specific percentages. However, the Soma system presents several notable drawbacks. The operation is slow, taking approximately two minutes to fully open or close a window shade. The setup process is described as wonky, and the accompanying app is basic, lacking advanced features. Once installed, manual control of the shades is no longer possible, meaning users rely entirely on the automated system. Automation options are limited to time-based timers, with no support for geolocation or sunrise/sunset triggers. The cost is a consideration, with one shade unit priced at $149 (or $119 for a three-pack) and the Soma Connect bridge at an additional $99. The hardware consists of a nondescript white box for the controller, measuring about 7.5 x 5.8 x 4.5 cm, compatible with beaded and endless loop cords. An alternative, Soma Tilt, is available for horizontal blinds with a rod. The Soma Connect hub, another white box, facilitates communication with voice assistants via WiFi. The system's setup is relatively straightforward but can be time-consuming due to slow responses and potential reconfigurations, particularly for achieving precise shade positioning. The app's interface is minimal, offering only basic controls and time-based triggers, and has not received updates since late 2017. The motor's operating sound, while not overtly annoying at a distance, can be noticeable, especially if near a bed. Smart home integration requires the Soma Connect bridge. The setup involves connecting the device to a WiFi network through the app, which then automatically links to nearby Soma devices via Bluetooth. For Google Assistant, integration is not native, meaning users must use a specific phrase like "Talk to Soma Connect" and input an ID number. This non-native integration also limits Voice Match functionality across household members. Despite these limitations, the Google Assistant app response time is quick. Considering the compromises, the Soma system is generally not recommended for most users. Its high cost, large and difficult-to-hide device, slow and audible motor, lack of manual control, and limited app features detract from its utility. The non-native Google Assistant integration further complicates its use. However, it may be suitable for specific scenarios, such as homes with disabled or elderly individuals who benefit from automation, or for those who only require simple timed shade operations, particularly with horizontal blinds that have quicker open/close cycles due to their shorter travel distance. The market for retrofit smart shades is limited, with competitors like MySmartBlinds, Brunt Blind Engine, and AXIS Gear each having their own limitations or higher price points. For most, waiting for more robust retrofit options or investing in full shade replacements like those from Ikea or Lutron is a more advisable approach. #SmartHome #SmartShades #HomeAutomation #GoogleAssistant #SmartBlinds #ProductReview #RetrofitTechnology #SmartHomeIntegration #SmartHome #SmartShades #HomeAutomation #GoogleAssistant #SmartBlinds #ProductReview #RetrofitTechnology #SmartHomeIntegration
