Solem table keeps cables tidy with hidden storage in each leg
Copenhagen designer Martin Solem has developed the "Solem table," an innovative furniture piece designed to address the common problem of messy cables in office and residential settings. The table integrates hidden storage within its legs, providing a clean and elegant solution for cable management.
Each of the four tapered legs of the Solem table is ingeniously molded into a U-shape. While appearing solid from the exterior, the inner surface of these legs is specifically designed to house and conceal wires. This unique structural design is the outcome of an extensive engineering process, which included thorough research into bending plywood techniques.
To further enhance cable organization and protection, the interior of these U-shaped leg tunnels is lined with felt. This felt lining serves a dual purpose: it safeguards the wires from potential damage and helps to keep them neatly in place, preventing tangles and disarray. Solem, who previously worked for the Danish cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen and is currently part of the design team at HAY in Copenhagen, emphasized that the table's design is both visually elegant and remarkably lightweight, all while maintaining solid structural integrity.
The aesthetic of the Solem table reflects modern Scandinavian design principles, characterized by clean lines and a minimalist approach. This design philosophy allows the table to seamlessly integrate into a variety of environments, from contemporary residential spaces to professional commercial offices.
Manufactured for the American company Bernhardt Design, the Solem table features white oak veneer tops. The supports are crafted from bent plywood, a material choice that contributes to both its lightweight nature and structural stability. The table offers customizable options, including the integration of USB power modules directly into the desks. Additionally, metal trays can be affixed underneath the tabletop to provide extra space for managing more extensive wire setups or for storing various office equipment, further enhancing its functionality as a cable management solution.
The Solem series is available in a range of sizes, catering to diverse needs, from compact cafe tables to larger conference tables. The collection also allows for contrasting finishes, with special editions featuring striking black or white surfaces that highlight the natural edges of the bevelled plywood. Martin Solem's design contributions have been recognized in significant exhibitions, such as New York's A Few Good Things in 2016, which showcased prominent Norwegian design talent. His work has also been featured in Milan, where he presented a series of patterned textiles inspired by natural materials, demonstrating his versatile design capabilities beyond furniture.
