Seeing Through His Lens: A Q&A with Interior Designer Sergio Mercado
Sergio Mercado, an interior designer with a distinctive modern aesthetic, shares insights into his journey and design philosophy. Mercado's career began in San Francisco, where he developed a signature style that blended contemporary sleekness with timeless luxury. He honed his skills working with prominent brands such as BAMO, Inc. and Clodagh Design, contributing his unique vision to residential, hospitality, and commercial projects. For the past nine years, he has focused on building his eponymous firm, Sergio Mercado Design Studio, where he emphasizes client-centric design while incorporating his artistic flair.
Mercado's inspiration for interior design traces back to his childhood, where he enjoyed rearranging furniture and even designed his own bedroom at 16. His current work is characterized by spaces that are rich in design and texture, yet exude a sense of calm and serenity. He explains that his design ethos has evolved to prioritize creating life-enriching environments that are both beautiful and practical for daily living. When encouraging clients to step out of their comfort zones, Mercado believes in passionately presenting his concepts, allowing his enthusiasm to inspire their confidence in his vision.
Regarding investment in decor, Mercado advises on prioritizing well-designed, limited-edition furnishings from renowned designers. He cites pieces by Finn Juhl, Wendell Castle, or Sergio Rodrigues as examples that not only make a significant impact visually but also retain their value over time. He mentions favorite brands like Avenue Road for furnishings, The Future Perfect for lighting, Rosemary Hallgarten for rugs and textiles, and Salvatori and Boffi for plumbing fixtures and bathroom vanities, all chosen for their quality and design. Mercado challenges the notion of strict design rules, stating that there shouldn't be any.
To prevent client decision fatigue, Mercado's studio presents multiple concepts from the outset and aims to avoid revisiting decisions. He notes that original ideas often prove to be the strongest. Clients often seek the most assistance with selecting sofas and dining chairs due to the tricky nature of scale in seating. His team insists that clients physically test out seating options. A significant portion of Mercado's projects involve gut renovations. He also educates clients on the value of investing in certain pieces, providing biographies of designers and encouraging attendance at furniture fairs like Salon of Art & Design or Design Miami.
Mercado has cultivated long-term relationships with clients, working on multiple homes for some. This repeated collaboration fosters a deeper level of trust and comfort, making it easier to discuss and implement shared visions and concepts in subsequent projects.
