Rachel Castle’s colourful & quirky abode
Rachel Castle, the creative force behind the successful Castle brand, has infused her Sydney lower north shore home with her distinctive eye for bold hues and texture. Her 1930s property, purchased with her husband Daz, underwent a significant renovation after a three-year planning phase. Due to heritage restrictions, initial approvals only covered the downstairs renovation, but the family proceeded, living upstairs during the six-month rebuild. During this period, the roof downstairs was removed, and the space was extended and reconfigured to create an expansive open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area. Additionally, the front rooms were refreshed, and a new outdoor decking area was constructed, replacing an old pool fence with a new glass one.
Rachel's home is a testament to her aesthetic, featuring vibrant colors and a curated collection of artworks, plants, books, ceramics, and other cherished items. She believes in displaying beautiful objects rather than storing them away. A key design element in the renovation is the wall of custom-made black-steel-framed windows and doors, which Rachel considered non-negotiable. The flooring and windows are highlighted as the most satisfying aspects of the renovation. The kitchen showcases a timber veneer for the island and shelving, meticulously sourced by interior designer Tina to complement the floors. Carrara marble from SNB Stone forms the benchtop, while four stools from Mark Tuckey introduce earthy tones.
The living area features a Ligne Roset "Togo" sofa, where Rachel and her dog, Sydney Sausage, relax. A prominent paper shade illuminates an original Bernard Villemot portrait from Vintage Posters Only. The room also boasts a salon-style display of paintings, including prints by David Band, Little Flora, and Navy Flower prints by Rachel Castle, alongside a Paul Hodges tea towel. A jumbo pink velvet floor cushion by Castle provides additional comfort and a pop of color. The space is further enhanced by a round skylight, which bathes the room in natural light. Different textures are incorporated through an Arthur G Baker velvet armchair and a vintage Moroccan floor rug from Koskela.
The bathroom maintains a simple yet effective design with floor-to-ceiling tiling, which Rachel describes as having subtle detailing. Her home office features a sliding door, painted pink on one side and white on the other, separating it from the study shared by her husband Daz and son Lucas. Muuto wall hooks serve as handles. The office displays Rachel's paintings and prints, along with a "Mad as a cut snake" tea towel and a paper sculpture by Castle. Rachel's bedroom is designed for simplicity and tranquility, with novels scattered throughout. She crafted the bedhead herself by stretching silk fabric over a canvas. Her daughter Cleo's room is personalized with collected images from books and magazines, Polaroids, and a framed heart print by David Band, complemented by Castle bedlinen. A quirky papier-mâché puppy from the MCA gift shop adds a playful touch to the living room.
