The Madrid-based Patricia Bustos Studio has unveiled 'Wonder Galaxy,' a retro-futuristic dressing room designed to evoke a sense of 'childhood energy' through its vibrant use of color and dream-like elements. This project draws inspiration from the aesthetic of video games and the Austin Powers film series, aiming to create an immersive and playful environment. The space features geometric patterns and rounded shapes, contributing to its asymmetric interior design. A central aspect of the 'Wonder Galaxy' is its innovative lighting scheme. The dressing room is bathed in pastel and neon hues, with smart lightbulbs and Philips Hue application used to choreograph changing light scenes. These dynamic lighting effects interact with various textures and shapes throughout the room, enhancing the other-worldly atmosphere. Iridescent and mirrored surfaces are strategically incorporated to expand the perceived depth of the interior, creating an illusion of infinite space. The design is further characterized by layered alcoves and intricate tiled mosaics. The windows feature lined methacrylates that are color-degraded to produce captivating light and shadow effects. These effects stand in stark contrast to the thin, matte tiles decorating the walls. The gresite tiles, made from recycled glass by the Spanish brand Hisbalit, contribute to a pixilation effect, immersing visitors in a video game-like experience. Unique lighting fixtures further emphasize the retro-futuristic theme. A ceiling lamp composed of an arrangement of bubbles conveys a sense of lightness and references zero-gravity. Additionally, pyramid lighting elements crafted from brushed brass and iridescent methacrylate evoke the aesthetics of retro puzzle video games. All furniture and accessories within 'Wonder Galaxy' were custom-made for the project, reinforcing its unique identity. Notable pieces include the 'bubble gum' sofa and 'spaceship' sinks. Bespoke shelves, designed to echo the brass accents and curved forms prevalent in the interior, are integrated into the rib-like structure of the space. This project was a highlight of Casa Décor, Madrid’s renowned design event, which was celebrating its 54th edition. Casa Décor serves as a platform for showcasing emerging trends in interior design, transforming a different central Madrid location each year.
