Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati Talks Design, Miami And Design Miami/
Panerai, a brand with a rich history dating back to the 1800s, maintains its position as a leader in the luxury watch industry by integrating Italian heritage with Swiss technology and nautical design elements. The brand is recognized for its innovation and has cultivated a dedicated following known as 'Paneristi.'
In line with its commitment to design, Panerai and its CEO, Angelo Bonati, have collaborated with Design Miami/ for the third consecutive year to present the Panerai Design Miami Visionary Award. This award honors individuals and teams who demonstrate exceptional design work and use their practice for broader societal impact. At the most recent Design Miami/ fair, the prestigious award was bestowed upon several deserving recipients: New York-based architect Annabelle Selldorf and her team at Selldorf Architects, conceptual American artist Rashid Johnson, the charitable organization 14+ Foundation, and Swiss architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein of Christ & Gantenbein. This collaborative group was recognized for their work on the Mwabwindo School, an educational institution in Zambia, southern Africa, set to open in 2018 and provide free education to its students.
During the award ceremony, held in the Design Miami/ theater space, Mr. Bonati and Design Miami/ Chief Creative Officer, Rodman Primack, emphasized the importance of acknowledging design not only for its aesthetic and functional qualities but also for its potential to contribute meaningfully to society. Joseph Mizzi, CEO and co-founder of the 14+ Foundation, highlighted the significance of the volunteer participants and the recognition from Panerai and Design Miami/ for the project.
Following the ceremony, Mr. Bonati discussed the importance of Panerai's partnership with Design Miami/, underscoring that design is a crucial element that distinguishes Panerai and contributes to its exclusive appeal. He also elaborated on the brand's presence in Miami, noting its significant growth over the past two decades and the importance of its boutique in the city. The two-year-old, 2,200-square-foot Panerai flagship store, located in the Palm Court area of the Miami Design District, was designed by renowned architect Patricia Urquiola. The boutique stands out with its contemporary light fixtures, which mimic watch components, ship-like wall displays, a second-floor courtyard overlooking Palm Court, and a wall-mounted clock inspired by the Luminor Marina, featuring luminescent green coloring. This reflects a synergy between Miami's evolving contemporary landscape and Panerai's adherence to its cultural roots while embracing modern design.
When questioned about Panerai's future growth and what to expect in the coming year, Mr. Bonati succinctly stated that the brand anticipates continued success. He affirmed that Panerai will maintain its current strategy and persist in producing high-quality watches, which he considers the brand's core mission.
