Pandemic Project: Rust-Oleum RockSolid Garage Floor Coating

The article details a do-it-yourself (DIY) project to apply Rust-Oleum RockSolid Garage Floor Coating to a garage bay. The author, having been confined at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, undertook this project to transform a neglected space in a newly acquired farm house in suburban Detroit. The decision to coat the garage floor was influenced by a previous positive experience with a Rust-Oleum product in a former home, where the coating remained in excellent condition for ten years. The primary benefits of an epoxy-coated concrete floor, as highlighted, include improved aesthetics, easier cleaning due to reduced dust accumulation, resistance to moisture absorption, simple cleanup of spills, prevention of oil stains, and enhanced resistance to chipping and cracking. Before commencing the project, the author researched various garage floor coating options, focusing on DIY-friendly, safe, fast, and affordable solutions that would yield durable results. Rust-Oleum's product line was a primary consideration, specifically comparing their Concrete & Garage Floor Paint, EpoxyShield, and RockSolid lines. The RockSolid product, a two-part solvent-based epoxy, was ultimately chosen based on its reputation as the highest-end option from Rust-Oleum, offering superior longevity and strength compared to water-based alternatives. Other options considered included a Polyurea kit from Garage Flooring LLC and Armorclad from ArmorPoxy, both of which were more expensive or required additional application steps like a primer. Expert advice from Megan Newton, Rust-Oleum’s Director of Brand Marketing in High-Performance Coatings, further guided the decision. Newton, who had recently used RockSolid for her own garage, emphasized its proprietary Polycuramine technology, which combines multiple chemistries and resins to create an ultra-hard coating. This technology makes RockSolid twenty times stronger than regular two-part epoxy paint and even stronger than Rust-Oleum's EpoxyShield, making it the most robust and visually appealing option available. She also stressed the critical importance of preparation and suggested conducting a moisture test to identify potential issues with the concrete floor. The preparation phase was extensive and involved several steps. First, a moisture test was performed by taping a plastic sheet to the floor overnight; fortunately, the garage floor was dry. Next, weather conditions were carefully monitored, as the product requires application within a temperature range of 40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with several days of dry weather before and after. The garage bay was completely cleared out, a task for which the author hired assistance to save time and effort. Following this, the floor was thoroughly cleaned and degreased using Rust-Oleum Cleaner and Degreaser for Concrete, requiring extensive scrubbing and rinsing, despite a minor setback with a broken pressure washer. The floor was then left to dry for two days. Etching was the subsequent step, utilizing the citric acid crystals included in the RockSolid kit, a safer alternative to the Muriatic acid previously used by the author. This process involved mixing the crystals with water, pouring the solution onto the concrete, scrubbing, and then thoroughly rinsing and squeegeeing the floor before another two-day drying period. The final preparatory step involved repairing existing cracks and dings in the 15-20-year-old concrete slab using pre-mixed liquid concrete patch and foam filler cord for wider, deeper cracks, with sand used for exceptionally deep fissures to ensure structural integrity. These patches were allowed to cure for 24 hours. With all preparatory work completed, the application of the base coat began under ideal weather conditions. The two-part epoxy was mixed according to instructions, ensuring the internal barrier between components burst and a thorough three-minute mixing process. The author then had one hour to apply the mixture. The epoxy was poured onto the floor in sections, edged with a brush, and then spread evenly with a foam roller in a “W” pattern. Decorative paint chips were broadcast over the wet epoxy after each section of the base coat was applied. The author strategically worked from the back of the garage towards the exit to avoid stepping on the wet coating. The entire 2.5-car garage kit was used for the 358-cubic-foot bay. After a two-day curing period for the base coat, a textured top coat was applied using the same method. The total project cost, excluding hired labor, was under $800, significantly less than a professional installation, which would have cost $3,000 or more. The author expressed satisfaction with the outcome, despite minor imperfections visible to a perfectionist's eye, noting the improved appearance and functionality of the garage floor and indicating a willingness to use the RockSolid system again for future projects. #GarageFloorCoating #RustOleum #RockSolid #DIYProject #HomeImprovement #EpoxyFlooring #GarageRenovation #ConcreteCoating #PandemicProject #GarageFloorCoating #RustOleum #RockSolid #DIYProject #HomeImprovement #EpoxyFlooring #GarageRenovation #ConcreteCoating #PandemicProject
