Outdoor Kitchens By The Numbers

The increasing popularity of outdoor kitchens is highlighted through key findings from exclusive NKBA research, revealing significant trends in homeowner preferences, spending habits, and design choices. On average, homeowners invest approximately $13,000 in an outdoor kitchen, with a substantial portion (22%) opting for high-end designs exceeding $30,000 and another 14% spending between $20,000 and $30,000. This data indicates a strong market for both mid-range and luxury outdoor living spaces. In terms of size, most outdoor kitchens, accounting for 66%, typically range from 100 to 400 square feet, often incorporating a dedicated sitting area within the meal preparation zone. A smaller but notable segment, 22%, extends beyond 400 square feet, while only 12% are under 100 square feet, suggesting a preference for spacious and functional outdoor cooking environments. Grilling habits show diversity in fuel sources, with 31% of homeowners possessing two grills. Propane and natural gas are almost equally favored, used by 44% and 45% of homeowners respectively, while charcoal is chosen by 22%. Stainless steel dominates as the preferred finish for grill hoods, selected by 77% of homeowners, and additional features like extra burners (75%), warming racks (57%), and rotisseries (50%) are common, enhancing the versatility of these spaces. Overhead structures are a common addition, with 52% of outdoor kitchens featuring some form of fixed cover. Pergolas are popular, found in 30% of designs, and 13% include adjustable or retractable structures, offering flexibility in weather protection. A small minority, 12%, opt for no overhead structure. Beyond cooking, outdoor kitchens are increasingly becoming entertainment and comfort hubs. A significant 62% include a TV, and an equal percentage feature built-in storage or cabinets. Fire pits are present in 58% of these spaces, contributing to a cozy ambiance. Luxury appliances such as wine refrigerators (26%) and ice makers (25%) further elevate the outdoor living experience. The creation of these outdoor spaces often involves professional assistance. The majority of homeowners (64%) engage an interior designer, while 41% collaborate with a landscape or garden architect/specialist. A smaller proportion, 10%, enlist a traditional architect, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of outdoor kitchen design. When it comes to materials, natural stone is the top choice for outdoor countertops, favored by 57% of homeowners, followed by quartz at 23%. Reflecting on their projects, a notable portion of homeowners express wishes for improvements. Twelve percent regret not investing more time or money in shelter/shade enclosures, 10% desired a larger space, and 9% wished for better countertops. Controlling atmosphere, temperature, and lighting was a concern for 7%, and 5% felt they could have improved cabinets/storage. In terms of usage, the male head-of-household is identified as the primary outdoor cook in 75% of cases. This comprehensive data underscores the evolution of outdoor kitchens from simple grilling areas to sophisticated, multi-functional extensions of the home, driven by a desire for enhanced lifestyle, comfort, and entertainment capabilities. #OutdoorKitchens #HomeDesignTrends #NKBAResearch #OutdoorLiving #KitchenDesign #HomeownerPreferences #DesignStatistics #LuxuryOutdoorSpaces #OutdoorKitchens #HomeDesignTrends #NKBAResearch #OutdoorLiving #KitchenDesign #HomeownerPreferences #DesignStatistics #LuxuryOutdoorSpaces
