OmniMount RE18 Pre-Built AV Rack Review
The OmniMount RE18 is presented as a cost-effective and fully assembled AV rack enclosure designed for organizing multiple audio and video components. With an MSRP of $599, the RE18 is highlighted as a competitive option in the market, especially when compared to similar products that often exceed $1000. It is a standard 19-inch rack, allowing compatibility with all standard 19-inch rack accessories. The RE18 is 18U tall, with OmniMount also offering 27U and 42U versions for larger setups.
The rack measures 23.6 inches in width, 23.6 inches in depth, and 38.9 inches in height, including the enclosure and feet. It comes pre-assembled with three 2U shelves and three 2U blanking panels, which can be repositioned or removed as needed. Each 2U shelf has a weight capacity of up to 50 lbs, suitable for most modern receivers or amplifiers. OmniMount also provides options to purchase additional 2U shelves and blanking panels separately, as well as a 5U shelf rated for 100 lbs, which includes a rear support rail.
Distinguishing itself from skeleton racks, the RE18 is fully enclosed, featuring a lockable glass front door that can be adjusted to hinge on either the left or right side. A solid metal rear access door offers similar hinging flexibility. Metal panels form the left and right sides of the cabinet, and both the doors and panels are easily removable for servicing or improved ventilation. A key feature setting the RE18 apart is its pre-installed cooling fans on the top, which, when combined with knock-out panels at the bottom, facilitate an upward airflow to keep equipment cool and extend its longevity. The rack also includes a caster base for easy placement and adjustable feet for leveling and stability without interfering with the casters.
Upon unboxing, the RE18 was found to be sturdy and well-constructed, with all components fitting snugly and functioning correctly. The built-in fan is noted for its efficiency in moving air and its relatively quiet operation. However, it is AC-powered and lacks an on/off switch, meaning it operates continuously when plugged in. Suggestions for managing fan power include plugging it into a switched outlet on an AV receiver or using a voltage-triggered AC outlet. The lock on the doors is designed to prevent unauthorized access by casual users, rather than to deter determined theft.
The RE18 accommodated a significant amount of equipment, including a Denon AVR-X4000 receiver, an Oppo Blu-ray player, a PS3, a 5-port switch, and a URC RF remote base station, without requiring additional shelving. The review also compares the RE18 to similar products from Sanus and Middle Atlantic. The Sanus CFR2115, a 15U rack, is priced at $529 but lacks a built-in fan and offers less space and fewer included accessories than the RE18. The Middle Atlantic IRCS-1824 is more comparable in features, including size, shelving, and built-in fans (though DC-powered), but retails for a higher price of $742.
The OmniMount RE18 is concluded to offer a strong balance of price, features, and convenience, making it a highly recommended option for consumers seeking a professional AV rack solution. Its pre-built design and included accessories streamline the installation process. The primary suggestion for improvement is for OmniMount to offer more accessories, such as a fan controller, to enhance its versatility.
