Mr. Chair by George Mulhauser for Plycraft

Plycraft, founded by Paul R. Goldman in 1953, initially produced plywood furniture and, for a period, fiberglass boats. The company operated in Massachusetts until 1994. Despite an optimistic beginning, with Goldman being recognized in a 1962 issue of *TIME* magazine and early chairs produced for Herman Miller, Plycraft's reputation was later affected by its involvement in producing knockoffs and various design disputes. This overshadowing often leads to less recognition for the company's original contributions, such as the 'Mr. Chair' series, designed by George Mulhauser. Mulhauser's 'Mr. Chair' is characterized by its distinctive single-shell back, winged arms, and a tufted leather seat. These chairs are occasionally available on online marketplaces like eBay, typically upholstered in white or black leather. The article highlights several instances where these iconic midcentury pieces have been incorporated into various home designs, showcasing their enduring appeal and versatility. One example features a pair of vintage Mulhauser for Plycraft chairs in a Seattle midcentury home that underwent a modern transformation. These chairs complement a bold interior design that includes a powder-coated orange fireplace, an Alexander Girard for Knoll coffee table, and undated paintings by Arthur L. Kaye, demonstrating how vintage pieces can integrate into contemporary aesthetics. Another illustration of the 'Mr. Chair's' application is found in a Washington home's living room, where a pair of these chairs, upholstered in sleek white leather, takes center stage. This setting is further enhanced by a Galaxy chandelier from Rejuvenation, a custom dining table, and Gideon Kramer Ion chairs in the adjacent dining area, illustrating a sophisticated integration of design elements. New York interior designer Betsy Morgan also utilized a pair of white leather-upholstered Mulhauser for Plycraft lounge chairs in a Chelsea basement, transforming it into a recreation room with a 'relaxed, Moroccan vacation vibe,' underscoring the chair's adaptability to various design themes. Textile designer Amy Butler incorporated a brown leather Mulhauser for Plycraft chair into her post-and-beam midcentury house in Granville, Ohio. She paired the streamlined vintage piece with her own fabrics and wallpaper, showcasing a personalized blend of old and new. In her living room, a vintage Plycraft lounger is combined with her Lacework wallpaper in Moss. Finally, the article notes the existence of green leather upholstery for the Plycraft lounger designed by George Mulhauser. While slightly less common, these variations were not unusual during the chair's original production period, adding to the collectible appeal of these pieces. The recurring appearance of these chairs in diverse settings and design contexts underscores their status as a celebrated midcentury design. #MidcenturyDesign #GeorgeMulhauser #Plycraft #MrChair #VintageFurniture #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignHistory #MidcenturyModern #MidcenturyDesign #GeorgeMulhauser #Plycraft #MrChair #VintageFurniture #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignHistory #MidcenturyModern
