Meet The Classic Interior Designers, With An Edge
Albion Nord, a London-based residential interior design and project management studio, specializes in a blend of European classicism and British style. The studio, founded by Anthony Kooperman, Ben Johnson, Camilla Clarke, and Ottalie Stride, creates interiors that aim to be timeless, imbued with soul and character. Their design philosophy centers on responding to client desires, the surrounding environment, and the site's inherent features, with a strong emphasis on storytelling through carefully sourced antiques, furniture, art, and accessories. Camilla Clarke and Ottalie Stride personally travel across the UK and Europe to discover unique pieces that personalize each home.
Albion Nord's design inspiration is rooted in creating depth and connection by reflecting the homeowner's narrative, the architecture, or the local area. This approach avoids a generic feel, ensuring each project possesses a distinct identity. Their preferred color palette includes earthy tones such as greens, dusky blues, ochres, chocolates, and creams, actively avoiding greys in favor of architectural creams or natural greens. Recently, they have incorporated yellows and pinks for their cheerful qualities. Pattern use is typically on a smaller scale, often featuring fabrics from designers like Tissus D’Helene, Zak & Fox, Soane, The Fabric Collective, and Blithfield. Antique fabrics are also frequently used for cushions or framed as artwork to add focal points.
Three projects highlight Albion Nord’s design principles. The first, a Notting Hill Family Home, draws inspiration from its Georgian architectural setting in Holland Park. This extensive 11,000 sq ft property underwent significant refurbishment, including new upper and basement floors with a gym and a 15m pool. The interior design blends crafted, textured modernity in joinery and furnishings, such as a bespoke scallop headboard by David Seyfried and a Cox London Golden Oak Chandelier. The firm combines vintage and antique finds with oversized, comfortable bespoke sofas. Natural and soft materials like honed limestone, washed oak, wool, sisal, abaca rugs, and tadelakt walls were used. Lighting incorporates natural light from large windows, supplemented by pendants, lamps, and decorative fixtures for warmth. The color palette is light and fresh, featuring Paint & Paper Library’s Slate III and Farrow & Ball’s Hardwick White, providing a neutral backdrop for contemporary abstract art.
The second project, Holland Park Apartments, emphasizes sustainability and individuality. Each apartment is designed with unique character, moving away from mass consumption by carefully selecting items and blending old with new. The team collaborates with independent craftsmen for bespoke pieces and sources antiques to create personal spaces. The layout maximizes views, with long, skylit corridors highlighted by statement artwork or sculptural tables leading to open-plan living areas. The color palette combines light, fresh tones with richer earthy greens, burnt oranges, and blues. A focus on textures and materiality ensures grounding, with timbers showcasing natural grains and marbles honed for softness.
Finally, a Marylebone Terrace House, a Grade II-listed Georgian property overlooking Regent's Park, focuses on reinstating period features. The 12,000 sq ft space is subtly decorated with a mix of antique and mid-century furniture, contemporary art, and a light, fresh color palette. The design creates a timeless aesthetic, layering eclectic pieces and British art to highlight the property's architectural grandeur. The media room features Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe, a dusty green-blue that changes with light, while Paint & Paper Library’s Slate III is used in the entrance hall to emphasize architectural details. The material selection prioritizes natural elements like oaks, linens, wools, silks, and sisals to add warmth, interest, and prevent the space from feeling static.
