Living room case study: a brand new look for under £6,000
This article details the transformation of a six-bedroom semi-detached Edwardian property's living room in Yorkshire, owned by Vanessa Roberts and her husband Andy. Initially, the living room was described as "massive, drab and soulless," with beautiful period features like skirting boards and cornicing lost due to a neutral color scheme. The couple had originally planned a simple repaint but, after discovering local interior designer Karen Knox on Houzz, decided to seek professional assistance to revitalize the space.
Vanessa was particularly drawn to Karen's style and was pleased to find her based locally. The couple provided Karen with their preference for geometric designs and warm metallic finishes, granting her creative freedom for the redesign. Karen proposed an inky blue wallpaper with gold geometric detailing for all four walls. Despite initial hesitation from Vanessa about wallpapering the entire room, they proceeded with the design, a decision they later appreciated for its transformative effect.
To manage costs, Andy and Vanessa undertook most of the DIY and decorating themselves. They utilized YouTube tutorials for guidance on tasks such as ripping up old carpet and preparing the floorboards. A significant challenge involved scraping decades of old bitumen from the floorboards, a two-day process that was eventually deemed worthwhile. For tasks requiring specialized skill, such as hanging the statement wallpaper, they hired a professional decorator, recognizing the value in ensuring a high-quality finish for such a distinctive design.
The total project cost amounted to £5,550, with a breakdown including £2,000 for windows, £2,000 for furnishings, £1,000 for interior design services, £300 for the decorator, and £250 for flooring. The furnishing strategy involved a blend of new, vintage, and upcycled items. Noteworthy pieces included a £20 sideboard from Ebay and a Nordium pendant light that was spray-painted gold. By spreading the cost of purchases over several months and acquiring key items gradually, they maintained affordability and were able to invest in premium elements like the wallpaper.
The renovation took approximately five months, with the couple dedicating weekends to the project, ensuring monthly breaks to avoid burnout. The completed living room is now described as a "show stopper" and a favorite spot for relaxation, reading, listening to music, and entertaining guests for aperitifs or "gin o’clock." The final design successfully integrated their existing Mid-century-style sofas and coffee table with new elements, creating a cohesive and vibrant space that reflects their personal style and hospitality.
