Is It Worth It? What To Know About Dyson's Vacuums Before You Buy
Dyson has emerged as a prominent vacuum cleaner brand globally, recognized for its distinctive design and effective marketing that emphasized its bagless technology and consistent suction. Since its initial commercial launch in 2003, Dyson has expanded its product line to include various vacuum cleaners and small home appliances, ultimately becoming the leading vacuum cleaner brand in the U.S. by market share. However, Dyson products are generally expensive, necessitating consumer education before purchase to determine their suitability, differentiate them from competitors and other Dyson models, and understand common complaints.
The necessity of a Dyson vacuum depends heavily on individual circumstances. For homes without carpeted floors, pets, or upholstered furniture, the need for a high-end vacuum is diminished. In such cases, less expensive alternatives like hand vacs or full-sized vacuums recommended for specific flooring types may suffice. For instance, WireCutter's review of hardwood vacuums highlights that Dyson models are significantly pricier than their main pick from Shark, upgrade pick from Miele, and budget pick from Bissell. Therefore, a Dyson purchase is most justifiable for specific use cases, such as the requirement for a high-power cordless stick vacuum on hardwood floors, after careful consideration of individual needs.
A crucial factor to consider when investing in an expensive product like a Dyson is the warranty and customer service. Dyson transparently outlines its warranty terms, but a notable disparity exists between cordless and corded models. Cordless Dyson vacuums, despite being a major draw due to their lightweight and ease of use, come with a two-year warranty, which is significantly shorter than the five-year warranty offered for corded models. This difference in warranty duration is considered underwhelming for a premium-priced brand, raising concerns about long-term reliability for cordless units.
Dyson offers a diverse range of vacuum cleaners with various features and price points. As prices increase, additional functionalities become available, including floor illumination, enhanced filtration, digital displays indicating collected debris, and models capable of washing bare floors. To assist consumers in navigating these options, Dyson provides an online tool that helps identify the best vacuum based on prioritized features, such as flooring type, desired warranty length, and maneuverability. This tool simplifies the decision-making process for those determined to purchase a Dyson but unsure which model best suits their requirements.
Consumer Reports, a respected non-profit publication known for its unbiased reviews, expressed concerns about Dyson's reliability. In March 2019, the organization removed all Dyson stick vacuums from its recommended list due to projected reliability issues. Data from reader surveys suggested that nearly half of Dyson stick vacuums might develop problems or break within five years, compared to approximately a quarter of stick vacuums from brands like Shark. This resulted in a 'poor' reliability rating for Dyson stick vacuums, although their canister and upright models maintained their recommendations. Common issues reported included battery failure, brush malfunctions, suction/power switch problems, and complete unit breakdowns. Dyson, in response, asserted that their rigorous testing and owner surveys contradicted Consumer Reports' reliability predictions.
Furthermore, Dyson is currently facing an ongoing class-action lawsuit concerning its warranty terms. The lawsuit alleges that Dyson unlawfully voids warranties for customers who attempt self-repairs before seeking professional service, a practice that plaintiffs claim violates the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This act and relevant Federal Trade Commission rules prohibit warrantors from conditioning warranty validity on the exclusive use of authorized repair services or replacement parts for non-warranty maintenance. Dyson has previously sought to dismiss the case, but an amended complaint filed in September 2023 continues to challenge these warranty clauses.
