Inside an art deco gem in London’s Fulham

Talisman House, a 1930s Art Deco building in London’s Fulham, originally served as a garage and petrol station. In 2011, BDLA Architects transformed this industrial structure into four spacious lateral lofts, each offering expansive living areas. This particular loft, spanning 5,000 square feet, exemplifies the adaptive reuse project. The interior design, also by BDLA Architects, features three bedrooms strategically placed around the perimeter, allowing for a vast open-plan central living space. The design integrates modern residential needs while respecting the building's historical and architectural integrity. The apartment showcases distinctive architectural elements that recall its industrial past. Crittall windows extend across the entire width of the property, providing ample natural light. At the rear, glazed doors further enhance the flow of light into deeper recesses of the space. BDLA Architects implemented clever storage solutions and integrated shelving throughout the property. A notable feature is a network of movable walls, which emerge from large oak doors, enabling the 21-meter-long main living area to be reconfigured into smaller, more intimate spaces as needed. This flexibility allows for dynamic adjustment of the living environment to suit various occasions and preferences. Material choices within the loft reinforce its industrial heritage. Polished concrete floors are used throughout, offering a durable and aesthetically coherent surface that ties back to the building's original function. Sliding steel doors are installed to separate the kitchen area and provide privacy in the bathrooms, further emphasizing the industrial aesthetic. Glazed brickwork and exposed steel pillars contribute to the overall atmosphere, blending the raw, utilitarian elements with refined design. The attention to detail extends to innovative features, such as kinetic bookshelves that pivot to create a dedicated library room with a simple turn of a handle. The master bedroom suite, measuring 7.5 meters, is equipped with floor-to-ceiling leather wardrobes and an en-suite bathroom that includes a steam room, offering luxurious and functional amenities. The conversion of Talisman House into contemporary lofts highlights a successful blend of historical preservation and modern architectural intervention. The project demonstrates how former industrial spaces can be re-envisioned as sophisticated residential units, incorporating elements of their past while providing flexible and luxurious living conditions. The London property, currently listed with The Modern House for £6.5 million, stands as a testament to thoughtful design and adaptive reuse within an iconic Art Deco shell. #ArtDeco #LondonProperty #Fulham #TalismanHouse #BDLAArchitects #LoftConversion #IndustrialHeritage #FlexibleLivingSpaces #ArchitecturalRenovation #ArtDeco #LondonProperty #Fulham #TalismanHouse #BDLAArchitects #LoftConversion #IndustrialHeritage #FlexibleLivingSpaces #ArchitecturalRenovation
