Inside a Japanese Tea House in SoHo
Sōrate, a unique tea house in SoHo, Manhattan, offers a blend of Italian and Japanese cultural influences, founded by Italian entrepreneur Silvia Mella in collaboration with Tea Master Keiko Kitazawa. The name Sōrate itself reflects this fusion, combining "calm down" in Venetian dialect with "sora," the Japanese word for "sky." The tea house provides an intimate setting for traditional tea and matcha ceremonies, as well as grab-and-go options.
Sōrate is situated at 103 Sullivan Street within an early 20th-century building. Its interior, designed by Venezia-based Studio Architecture Amaa, marries contemporary design with historical elements like the original tin ceiling. The space features serene neutral tones and natural materials such as wood and stone. A long counter accommodates only four patrons, fostering meaningful interactions and personalized service. The inviting atmosphere, visible through its large storefront window, is a key aspect of the establishment.
The menu at Sōrate highlights ceremonial-grade matcha and high-grade green teas, all sourced from a single farm in Ujitawara-cho, Kyoto prefecture, known for its historical significance in Japanese green tea manufacturing. Customers can enjoy matcha prepared traditionally with warm water or with a modern twist, including milk options, served hot or iced. The tea house also offers a selection of other teas like Sencha, Gyokuro, Hojicha, and Genmaicha, alongside specialty beverages such as Sparkling Iced Matcha with yuzu and caffeine-free Kombucha.
To complement the beverages, Sōrate provides light wagashi, traditional Japanese tea ceremony sweets, including matcha-infused desserts. A distinctive offering is the Sorashi Lunch Box, which ingeniously combines Italian ingredients like prosciutto, robiola cheese, and bottarga with Japanese elements such as black sesame tofu, pureed nori, pickled radish, and candied yuzu. This culinary fusion further exemplifies the tea house's bicultural identity.
A core differentiator for Sōrate is its commitment to sharing tea rituals. Silvia Mella was inspired by the serenity and stability that frequent tea breaks brought to her during a solo road trip in Japan, drawing parallels to daily Italian habits like a morning espresso. She envisioned Sōrate as a place in the United States where individuals could engage in calming rituals, combining insights from both cultures. Tea Master Keiko Kitazawa conducts various tea ceremonies, and Mella leads tastings, providing guests with insights into the intricate traditions of tea preparation while sampling different teas and food items. Mella views Sōrate as a "love letter to Japan," for teaching mindfulness, and "Italy," for instilling an appreciation for beauty. The tea house also hosts special events, such as founder-led tea tastings for members of Untapped New York Insiders.
