I tested three blind cleaning tools to dust my blinds
The author shares her struggle with cleaning blinds, particularly the 160 individual slats of plantation shutters in her Victorian terraced house, noting that traditional dusting methods often spread rather than remove dust. To find a more effective and time-efficient solution, she tested three different blind cleaning tools: the Minky Hi-Tech Duster, the Eddingtons Valet Blind And Shutter Brush, and the Scrub Daddy Damp Duster.
The first tool tested was the Minky Hi-Tech Duster, a microfiber duster known for its dust-trapping capabilities. While it picked up some dust, it didn't remove all of it, and the process remained time-consuming, partly due to the duster's size not fully accommodating the 8cm deep slats of her shutters. She concluded that while it performed adequately for a duster, it wasn't the specialized solution she sought.
Next, the Eddingtons Valet Blind And Shutter Brush, a specialist tool with four goat's hair bristles, was evaluated. The author was initially impressed by its lightweight design and soft bristles, making it pleasant to use for quick cleaning sessions. However, she found it too small to clean two slats simultaneously, and its design didn't perfectly suit the 6cm gap between her plantation shutter slats, rendering the bottom two brushes ineffective. Although it effortlessly glided over the slats, she noticed that it tended to push some dust to the sides rather than fully removing it, making it more suitable for light maintenance rather than deep cleaning. For a more thorough clean, she suggested supplementing it with a handheld vacuum cleaner.
Finally, the Scrub Daddy Damp Duster, a rippled sponge designed for wet dusting, was tested. Despite initial skepticism due to its unconventional appearance, it proved to be the most effective tool. The dampness allowed it to collect and trap dust and grime efficiently, leaving the blinds noticeably cleaner. The author was particularly impressed by its ability to remove hidden dirt that dry dusting had missed. She also discovered its versatility by using it to effortlessly remove a stubborn stain from a dining room blind slat and to clean skirting boards and bathroom window seals, revealing significant hidden dirt in these areas. The article highlights that wet dusting is superior to dry dusting as moisture helps dust adhere to the cleaning tool.
The overall conclusion is that while the Minky duster and Eddingtons brush have their merits for certain cleaning tasks, the Scrub Daddy Damp Duster emerged as the clear winner for its superior ability to deeply clean blinds and other surfaces, effectively removing visible and hidden grime. Its effectiveness and versatility make it a highly recommended tool for various household cleaning needs, proving that inexpensive products can be highly effective across multiple tasks.
