How to make a cottage that feels country and cosy rather than fuddy duddy
Katharine Paravicini, an interior designer, details her approach to renovating an 18th-century brick-and-flint cottage in Wiltshire, aiming to create a space that feels both country and cozy without appearing old-fashioned. Her primary concern was to enhance the brightness of the cottage, which features low ceilings, by painting all walls and woodwork in Farrow & Ball’s Pointing, a soft white. This choice served as a fresh backdrop for the interior design.
The sitting room's color scheme was largely inspired by a collection of pictures, some acquired through auctions and others found over time, including a framed plate. Many furnishings, such as the sofa covered in Christopher Farr Cloth’s Lost & Found fabric with a bullion fringe, were brought from the couple's previous London home. The lamp bases were sourced from antique sales or charity shops, while the lampshades on either side of the window were designed by her sister, Singapore-based interior designer Elizabeth Hay.
A particular challenge was addressing the windows. Paravicini considered shutters but found the window reveals unsuitable, and traditional curtains seemed too 'granny-ish.' She opted instead for blinds made from Namay Samay’s Sanobar print fabric from Tissus d’Hélène, which provided a more contemporary and less heavy solution.
Further contributing to the room’s unique character is an ottoman custom-made by upholsterer John Haswell, featuring an antique Suzani textile on its top and distinctive bright-red bobbin legs. An antique side chair was reupholstered in Soane’s Flax Coral fabric, adding another layer of texture and color. The room also includes a bespoke rug, custom-made in India, designed to integrate and complement the existing color palette of the space. Through these carefully selected elements and design decisions, Paravicini successfully transformed the cottage into a light, inviting, and stylish home that balances traditional country charm with a fresh, contemporary feel.
