This blog post showcases the meticulous redesign of an elegant Brownstone apartment located on 5th Avenue, Upper East Side, NYC, opposite The Met. The apartment is part of a 1926 block and retains classic period details, which the owners were keen to preserve while updating the interiors for modern living. Interior designer Joshua Smith was tasked with this challenge, aiming to create a timeless, elevated, and elegant space that was also highly livable and harmonious, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The design process prioritized classic and timeless aesthetics over fleeting trends. Smith emphasized the importance of considering the building's architecture in relation to the interior design, blending antiques with comfortable, modern furniture to achieve a fresh, light, and serene atmosphere. This approach is evident from the entryway, which was designed to create a sense of arrival. Architectural interest was added through varying ceiling colors, complemented by an antique French mirror, vintage brass lamp, and Swedish chairs upholstered in Fortuny fabric, creating a welcoming and visually engaging space. In the large formal living room, Smith addressed the challenge of its size by creating distinct zones. The room features a desk area, a primary seating arrangement with a coffee table, and a grand piano at the opposite end. Contemporary elements, such as striking lamps from Christopher Spitzmilner, were introduced to balance traditional styles. A light sisal rug was used to add warmth and texture, while silk velvets from Romo Fabrics and detailed finishes like fringe on pillows added sophistication, with careful consideration given to every detail. The kitchen design capitalized on the original architecture, featuring simple cabinets that align with the classic Upper East Side paneled ceiling. Smith focused on functionality, incorporating custom-made barstools in vegan leather with contrasting welting and buttons. The eat-in kitchen area, considered the central part of the house, was designed to be soft and transitional in color. A custom banquette in vegan leather was paired with mismatched antique chairs, utilizing fabrics from Kravet and Schumacher, and wallpaper by Philip Jefferies, to tell a cohesive design story. The dining room serves a dual purpose, functioning as both a dining area and a home library with an inviting seating and reading space. The custom-designed green and cream diamond-patterned carpet served as the initial inspiration, bringing a fresh and youthful geometric element to the room. A 1940s Lucite glass table with a brass base and coordinating vintage porcelain lamps further enhanced the blend of old and new. Antique cameos in gilt frames added a touch of heritage. However, the designer expressed a desire to have used Fortuny fabric for the club chairs in this room for a more playful touch. The primary bedroom was designed to be a serene and beautiful sanctuary, with a focus on rich textures and fabrics to add modern appeal. Achieving the perfect ethereal softness on the walls required multiple attempts. A custom-designed modern bed by Dune, with Sabina Fay Braxton fabric on the headboard and a Christopher Spitzmilner lamp on the nightstand, contributed to the elevated look. The layout of the large bedroom also cleverly incorporates a seating area with a leather-topped antique desk and chair, maximizing the use of space. For the guest room, Smith opted for a more vibrant color palette, combining lavender blue and aqua with custom watercolor stripes on the walls. The Romo fabric on the custom bed served as the starting point for this room's color scheme. Vintage furniture pieces, such as a curved-back 1940s chair upholstered in contemporary purple wool fabric and a custom white lacquer nightstand, added character. The room also features detailed millwork, a custom marble floor, and a tufted Greek edge banquet cushion, demonstrating a cohesive design aesthetic throughout the apartment.
