Hilary Farr Can't Stand One Of Today's Biggest Kitchen Cabinet Trends

Hilary Farr, known for her unfiltered design opinions on HGTV's "Tough Love," expresses strong views on current home features and finishes, particularly a rising kitchen cabinet trend: stained wood cabinets. While stained wood cabinets were popular from the 1970s to the 1990s, they were largely replaced by painted finishes in the 2000s and 2010s, with painting existing wood cabinets becoming a common method for achieving a modern aesthetic. However, wood tones are now experiencing a resurgence, becoming one of the most significant kitchen trends of 2024. Reports from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association and MasterBrand indicate that wood is rapidly displacing white as the preferred kitchen cabinet finish, with pale wood finishes being a top color choice. Despite this trend, Hilary Farr is not in favor of the return of all-wood kitchen cabinets. While she is not entirely against wood, she believes it is not the right time for this particular style to make a full comeback. Farr's design philosophy emphasizes timelessness in cabinetry. Her primary objection to wood cabinets stems from her preference for simple, luxurious aesthetics and her dislike for distracting design elements. She argues that stained cabinets can draw too much attention, detracting from other focal points within the kitchen's design. The only exception Farr makes for wood cabinet fronts is when they are made from "super cool walnut" that is intentionally echoed elsewhere in the space. Walnut, known for its dense grain and often cool gray undertones, receives Farr's approval due to its elegant appearance. However, premium woods like walnut are costly, making solid wood cabinets, particularly those made from walnut, prohibitively expensive for many. As an alternative, Farr suggests opting for painted cabinets, which are more cost-effective and allow for future color changes. Professional cabinet painting can also be a budget-friendly option, with costs as low as $3 per square foot. Farr also endorses blue as a timeless paint color for creating a welcoming kitchen atmosphere. For those who wish to incorporate wood tones into their kitchen without fully committing to stained wood cabinets, Farr offers several suggestions to avoid a distracting overall look. Smaller wooden elements, such as cutting boards, canisters, and utensils, can add natural warmth. Open wooden shelves, wooden furniture like oak kitchen tables or stools, and even faux exposed beams are other ways to introduce wood accents. Another approach is to use two-tone kitchen cabinets, combining wood with a complementary paint color. This allows homeowners to balance the warmth of wood with a contemporary painted finish. For example, wood can be used for either the upper or lower cabinets, or for a kitchen island (either the sides or a butcher block top), with the remaining cabinets painted to create a cohesive yet varied design. #HilaryFarr #KitchenDesign #CabinetTrends #StainedWood #PaintedCabinets #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #DesignTips #HGTV #HilaryFarr #KitchenDesign #CabinetTrends #StainedWood #PaintedCabinets #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #DesignTips #HGTV
