Explore Rountree’s Harry Potter House

Bill J. Viles, a retired businessman with seven grandchildren, and his fiancée Debbie Murphy, desired a home capable of hosting large family gatherings and fundraising events for local nonprofits. In 2014, they acquired two lots in Viles' former neighborhood in central Springfield, near Delaware Elementary School, from Mike Dobbs, the owner of Dobbs & Stuhlstaz Custom Homes. Dobbs, who previously resided in Rountree, had always envisioned building a home on this specific site and possessed the creative vision that Viles and Murphy sought for their new residence. Viles praised Dobbs's capabilities as a builder. The couple conveyed their preference for a home with numerous angles, an unconventional floor plan, and elaborate details such as towers and diverse siding materials. Their primary goal was to create a space suitable for entertaining guests, offering a grand yet intimate atmosphere. During the initial conceptualization phase, Dobbs found inspiration while watching a 'Harry Potter' movie with his nephews, leading him to propose building a classic English Tudor home, which was subsequently nicknamed the 'Harry Potter house.' Dobbs's intention was to maintain authenticity, aiming to create a residence that appeared as though it had existed in the area since its inception. Dobbs and his team conducted extensive research into Tudor architectural styles, encompassing aspects from light fixtures and wooden trims to period-appropriate landscaping. They developed a contemporary, open-concept floor plan for the 6,880-square-foot house, seamlessly integrating traditional Tudor design elements into both the interior and exterior. Dobbs emphasized the desire for the home to feel very comfortable, cozy, and intimate. After two years of dedicated research and meticulous planning, construction commenced on the three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath residence. The interior design features a blend of refurbished antiques and salvaged architectural components, alongside custom-made furniture and decor. A significant emphasis was placed on showcasing a variety of woods, a hallmark of Tudor design, throughout the home. The house incorporates antique cypress, fir, pine, walnut, and pecan, each meticulously stained by hand using various waxes. The sinking cypress floors on the main level, made from wood submerged in the Mississippi River for centuries, were treated with a mixture of vinegar and steel wool to achieve their distinct color. Over 50 individuals contributed to the construction of the home, including a craftsperson who utilized a chainsaw tool to create the intricate notches on the exposed wooden beams. Since its completion earlier in the year, Viles and Murphy have been adding the final touches and settling into their new residence. The 'Harry Potter house' has already served as a venue for numerous fundraising events for organizations such as the Junior League of Springfield, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, fulfilling its purpose as a hub for both family and community engagement. #HomeDesign #EnglishTudor #CustomHomes #ArchitecturalDesign #InteriorDesign #Woodwork #Craftsmanship #EntertainingSpace #SpringfieldMissouri #HomeDesign #EnglishTudor #CustomHomes #ArchitecturalDesign #InteriorDesign #Woodwork #Craftsmanship #EntertainingSpace #SpringfieldMissouri
