Everyone is Awesome, says Lego in rainbow tribute to Pride Month
Lego has introduced a new product called 'Everyone is Awesome' to celebrate inclusivity and diversity, coinciding with Pride Month. The set, launched on June 1, 2021, is a buildable display model inspired by the rainbow flag, a widely recognized symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community. This initiative marks a significant step for the iconic toy brand, known for fostering creativity and self-expression across generations, by directly addressing its diverse fanbase.
The 'Everyone is Awesome' set comprises 11 minifigures, each distinguished by a different color and a unique hairstyle. Matthew Ashton, Lego's vice president of design and the set's designer, highlighted that this is the first time the company has released a product specifically designed to honor the diversity within its fan base. The color spectrum of the set is a direct representation of the rainbow and LGBTQIA+ flags, meticulously chosen to convey a message of love and inclusivity. Ashton explained that the minifigures were deliberately kept simple and eye-catching, intended to be a source of pride for those who display them in their homes.
In line with Lego's core values of fun, creativity, learning, and imagination, the collection encourages individuals to personalize and interpret the classic design in their own way. A conscious decision was made during the design process to avoid gendering the minifigures, allowing the builder to assign gender identities to the characters as they see fit. Ashton revealed that the inspiration for the set came from a personal project he had created for his own desk. This personal endeavor evolved into a commercially released product when the idea of launching something specifically for the LGBTQIA+ community arose. Ashton also reflected on the recent global struggles, suggesting that these events have prompted a collective introspection and a greater need for empathy, love, and acceptance among people.
