Dulux's Colour of the Year 2025 is guaranteed to bring you joy
Dulux has announced True Joy, a warm, energizing yellow, as its Colour of the Year for 2025. This selection aims to infuse homes with optimism and energy, encouraging a positive outlook and an embrace of change. Yellow has historically been recognized for its ability to brighten spaces and evoke happiness, with recent Google searches for 'sunny yellow paint' increasing by 250 percent in the UK over the past year, indicating a growing public interest in this vibrant hue.
True Joy is described as a versatile citrus shade that can revitalize various areas of the home, such as hallways, kitchens, or family spaces. Its rich yet non-overpowering brightness is intended to uplift residents and radiate sunshine throughout the year. The article suggests that True Joy can be used as a standalone bold statement or combined with complementary colors like orange, blue, or grey to create personalized spaces. For those seeking a more subtle application, it can be incorporated through painted shapes, niches, alcoves, or as an accent for furniture and space zoning.
Marianne Shillingford, creative director and colour expert at Dulux, highlights the versatility of True Joy, noting that despite yellow being a bolder color, True Joy complements a wide range of palettes. It enhances the positivity of neutral shades and serves as a unifying element for more daring color schemes. She emphasizes the profound meaning behind the color's choice, viewing it as a call to action that fosters self-improvement and confidence, enabling individuals to move past the past and shape a brighter future.
Dulux's annual Colour of the Year announcement, part of its ColourFutures trend forecasting program, involves global experts in design, architecture, and media to identify a color that reflects the prevailing global mood. For 2024, the chosen color was Sweet Embrace, a delicate pale pink. This year's selection of True Joy underscores a collective desire for joy and optimism.
To demonstrate True Joy's application, Dulux has developed three distinct color palettes. The first, 'Lively and adventurous,' features bold combinations of bright blue, orange, and accent yellow to create spontaneous, energetic, and imaginative interiors. The second, 'Neutral and artisanal-inspired' (Human palette), offers a grounded feel by pairing True Joy with earthy tones and raw materials, celebrating craftsmanship. The third, 'Rich and eclectic' (Proud palette), provides a warm, rooted, and confident living space through layers of color inspired by diverse cultural heritages, incorporating shades like Spiced Terracotta and Sapphire Splendour alongside True Joy.
