DIY bathroom makeover: Marble showers, DIY vanity
Alisa Bovino, an interior design blogger and account supervisor at a pharmaceutical marketing agency, undertook a significant DIY project to transform her outdated master bathroom into a luxurious Parisian-style space. The bathroom, located in her northern New Jersey home, initially featured purple walls, 1960s tile with thick black grout, an old fiberglass shower, a beige toilet, and a builder-grade vanity, none of which aligned with her personal style. Motivated to create a chic master bathroom, Bovino dedicated her evenings, weekends, and days off to the renovation.
The demolition phase began in early September, and the entire project was completed by the first week of November. Bovino’s vision for the bathroom was a blend of modern and vintage elements, embodying a luxurious Parisian aesthetic. She successfully achieved this look through various DIY efforts and strategic purchases.
A key transformation was replacing the old tub with a sleek, floor-to-ceiling Carrara marble shower, which significantly elevated the bathroom's elegance. She also custom-painted a vanity in a deep green hue, a process that involved some initial challenges with spray painting but ultimately yielded a rich and refined finish after multiple coats and sanding.
For decor, Bovino incorporated a Venetian-style mirror, which she sourced for under $200, and a brass sconce found on Etsy, adding unique and charming touches to the space. She also installed Valentino marble herringbone floors, meticulously ensuring every detail met her vision. Among her budget-friendly finds were gold vintage frames, purchased for just $10, which she noted provided excellent value and enhanced the aesthetic. Framed artwork was also used to add color and beauty to the bathroom.
The total cost for materials was approximately $7,500. This figure was partially offset by sponsored items such as the faucet, moldings, and trim, which were provided for free. By undertaking the labor herself, Bovino saved an estimated $5,300, as she calculated that professional services for the renovation would have cost around $12,800. This substantial saving highlights the financial benefits of DIY home improvement projects when feasible.
Bovino’s project demonstrates that it is possible to achieve a high-end, personalized look through dedicated DIY efforts. For those looking to implement similar changes, even without a full demolition, Bovino suggests that simple updates like fresh paint, new hardware, and carefully selected decor can significantly transform a bathroom. More of her home DIY projects are documented on her blog, “A Glass of Bovino.”
