Darth Vader would feel right at home in this Star Wars-themed home theater

Patrick and Stephanie, a couple from Nixa, Missouri, embarked on a project to create a dedicated Star Wars-themed home theater within their new house. Patrick sought assistance from Shawn Byrne of Quest Acoustical Interiors, who shared his passion for Star Wars and possessed the necessary expertise to bring the vision to fruition within budget. The design of the theater draws inspiration from iconic Star Wars scenes, particularly the Death Star, influencing both aesthetic and functional elements. To achieve the Death Star aesthetic, wall panel framing was constructed using 1/2-inch MDF (medium-density fiberboard), on which MDF wall panels were hung. A local business equipped with a CNC (computer numerical control) routing machine was contracted to precisely cut the MDF paneling and additional surface details. Frosted plexiglass was installed on the backside of the MDF, creating a 1/2-inch gap to accommodate LED strip lighting. This RGB LED strip lighting allows Patrick to change the accent colors of the room, switching between blue for the 'light side of the force' and red for the 'dark side,' or even combining both when sensing conflict. The stair lighting also features color-changing capabilities. The seating area features HT Design's Warwick home-theater recliners, which are motorized and include lighted cup holders with integrated USB ports for charging devices. The room incorporates tiered seating for optimal viewing. The screen is a fixed Severtson Cinema White MicroPerf, measuring 117 inches wide with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This acoustically transparent screen was chosen to conceal the Aperion Audio Verus Grand tower speakers, ensuring a seamless visual appearance. Star Wars-themed blankets and throws are provided for comfort. Significant attention was paid to sound isolation during the construction. The floor was laid using Serena Mat from Soundproofingcompany.com and 3/4-inch OSB (oriented strand board), maintaining a gap from the walls. Larger cutouts in the MDF panels serve a dual purpose: mimicking Death Star designs and housing acoustic paneling, which is covered in Guilford of Maine Anchorage fabric. The riser, constructed as a large bass trap, and the stage, a mixture of sand and sawdust (requiring the transport of 3 tons of sand), further contribute to the room's acoustic performance. Patrick also crafted all the light, speaker, and HVAC back boxes. The HVAC supply and return boxes, as well as the projector box, are lined with LinacousticRC to dampen sound. The projector box, housing an Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 5040UB, is connected to the return via an exhaust fan and flex duct to vent hot air. The cover of the projector box is made of black plexiglass. The home theater's equipment list is extensive, including an Oppo UDP-203 UHD Blu-ray player, a Sony PlayStation 4 Pro gaming console, and an AT&T U-Verse set-top box. The audio system features a Denon AVR-X4300H AV receiver, Outlaw Model 2200 monoblock power amps (for LCR speakers), Outlaw Model 5000 5-channel power amps (for surrounds and Atmos overheads), and a miniDSP 10x10 HD Digital Signal Processor. The speaker setup comprises Aperion Verus Grand Towers (LCR), Triad InWall Bronze/4 Surrounds (side and rear), Triad InCeiling Bronze SealedRounds (Dolby Atmos overheads), and two Rythmik FV15HP subwoofers.
