Creating a Backyard Sanctuary Inspired by California Wine Country
Nicole Salceda, founder of Eye for Pretty, has transformed her backyard into a sanctuary inspired by California's wine country. The primary goal of this project was to create an outdoor space that emulates the ambiance of boutique hotels found in Napa and Sonoma. Salceda aimed to optimize the layout of her backyard to include distinct zones for entertaining, recreation, swimming, and relaxation.
To bring her vision to life, Salceda collaborated with Yardzen, a company specializing in custom landscape design. Yardzen's team assisted her in visualizing the space through colored renderings, incorporating her inspiration and layout ideas. This collaboration allowed for necessary adjustments and modifications throughout the design process, ensuring the final outcome aligned with Salceda's aesthetic and functional requirements.
The design emphasizes entertaining, featuring an outdoor kitchen island, a spacious deck with ample seating, an outdoor fireplace, and a large sectional area. These elements are designed to be inviting for both large gatherings and smaller, intimate groups. The expansive layout allows for simultaneous activities, such as children and their friends enjoying the redwood fire pit while adults socialize by the main fireplace.
Landscaping played a crucial role in achieving the desired wine country aesthetic. The Yardzen team incorporated specific plant varieties, including pittosporum silver sheen for hedges along the fence, iceberg roses, olive bushes, fountain grasses, feather grass, and fruitless olive trees. These plant selections contribute to a lush and sophisticated atmosphere, enhancing the overall sanctuary feel.
Salceda highlights the practicality of the design, noting that the outdoor season in the Bay Area extends for most of the year. Her new backyard has become a versatile extension of her home, hosting various events such as swim parties, birthday celebrations, barbecues, and numerous cozy evenings by the fire. The space encourages outdoor living and offers continuous enjoyment of the views of Mount Diablo. The transformation reflects a successful integration of design vision, collaborative execution, and careful selection of elements to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor environment.
