Bouclé for Your Walls?! 5 Ingenious Wallcoverings Designers Predict We'll See More of in 2024

The interior design landscape is witnessing a significant shift towards textured wallcoverings, moving beyond traditional flat wallpapers to embrace materials that offer depth, dimension, and warmth. This trend is part of a broader movement towards incorporating more tactile elements into home design. Experts like Stefan Theunis from Omexco highlight that textured wallcoverings are revolutionizing interior design by providing visually appealing alternatives that allow homeowners to create stylish and unique spaces. Phyllis Lui of Kalu Interiors emphasizes that these wallcoverings provide a more luxurious feel compared to typical flat wallpapers, enabling the creation of unique and special environments with proper planning. Several specific types of wallcoverings are predicted to gain prominence in 2024. Wood marquetry, for instance, is a style that draws from the 1970s aesthetic, featuring variations of brown hues and intricate patterns. Designers like Kevin Dumais of Dumais Interiors anticipate a return to traditional methods and artistry, particularly in plaster and wood marquetry, as they offer contemporary and luxurious texture without relying on traditional wallpaper. Philippe Desart, managing director of Arte, agrees, noting the convivial appeal of wood veneer and marquetry, alongside jacquard woven tapestries and natural fibers like cork and sisal. The Imperialis Collection by Omexco exemplifies this trend, showcasing paulownia wood meticulously placed against gilded backdrops to highlight the wood's natural grain and texture, incorporating geometric shapes and bold lines. Natural materials are also seeing a resurgence in wallcoverings, with sisal, jute, grasscloth, and other natural fibers becoming increasingly popular. Brands like Casamance are exploring the beauty and technicality of these fibers to create rich, stylish, and delicately natural wallcoverings. Casamance’s upcoming collection, inspired by Japanese culture, emphasizes sisal and woven paper with an artisanal look and refined embroideries, offering a modern yet authentic aesthetic. Mark Alexander is another brand actively working with natural wallcoverings, crafting pieces from raffia, sisal, abaca, and banana bark using artisanal techniques. The head of the brand, Mark Butcher, explains their goal is to create wallcoverings that become an intrinsic part of the architectural space, rather than just a decorative layer. While these natural materials often lend themselves to neutral color schemes, some collections, like Pierre Frey's Soleil Levant, experiment with bold colors, such as a striking blue, showcasing technological advancements in the field. Another unexpected yet impactful trend is bouclé for walls. Despite discussions about bouclé becoming overdone in upholstery, its application as a wallcovering offers a fresh perspective. Casamance's Etreinte collection features a bouclette for walls, available in 12 colors from classic cream to vibrant purple, providing an opulent texture that transforms a room into a serene sanctuary, according to Nathalie Ducoulombier of Casamance. Velvet is also making waves, with Casamance's Arcane design introducing unique 3D textures through velvet or linen shapes that are delicately embossed or embroidered. This collection, inspired by geometric and organic forms, offers significant tactile depth and visual interest, with foam backing providing noise-insulating properties. The Arcane collection is available in various colors, including beige, celadon, empire green, amber, and deep aubergine. Finally, metallic wallcoverings are gaining traction, offering a subtle sheen that elevates spaces. Phyllis Lui of Kalu Interiors notes that metallic and pearlescent backgrounds on wallcoverings will remain popular, as they transform plain backdrops into something unique and special. These wallcoverings provide an understated yet refined feel, with a pearlescent finish that shimmers with incoming light, making them ideal for layering art. An example from Kalu Interiors' home office design illustrates how an elegant Emma Hayes wallcovering with a subtle floral pattern on a pearlescent background creates a sophisticated focal point without overwhelming the space. These five types of wallcoverings represent innovative approaches to interior design, emphasizing texture, natural elements, and unique finishes to create distinctive and luxurious living environments in the coming year. #Wallcoverings #InteriorDesignTrends #TexturedWalls #WoodMarquetry #NaturalMaterials #BoucleWalls #VelvetWallcoverings #MetallicFinishes #HomeDecor2024 #Wallcoverings #InteriorDesignTrends #TexturedWalls #WoodMarquetry #NaturalMaterials #BoucleWalls #VelvetWallcoverings #MetallicFinishes #HomeDecor2024
