Bahamas Sketchbook of ‘Vernacular Architecture’ Launched at Historic Buena Vista Estate

A new hardcover picture book titled 'Bahamas Sketchbook' by acclaimed watercolour artist Graham Byfield is set to be released for the Christmas shopping season. This 72-page book focuses on the vernacular architecture of the Bahamian islands, featuring a collection of graceful illustrations complemented by historical text. An invitation-only book launch is scheduled for Thursday, December 12, at the John Watlings Distillery in the historic Buena Vista Estate, which is one of the book's key sponsors. Other notable sponsors include the Lyford Cay Club, the D’Aguilar Foundation, Odyssey Aviation, Callallo Books, Lindroth Development, and preservation architect Anthony Jervis. The 'Bahamas Sketchbook' aims to celebrate the built environment across several Bahamian islands. It portrays classic scenes and intricate architectural details from various locations such as New Providence, Abaco, Eleuthera, Long Island, and Cat Island. Approximately 30 of the original watercolours featured in the book will be available for sale at the launch event. Byfield dedicated about 18 months to creating these illustrations, during which he had the opportunity to visit many of the Out Islands. He expresses his hope that the book will raise public awareness regarding the importance of conserving the traditional architecture of the Bahamas. Reviewers anticipate that the 'Bahamas Sketchbook' will be both delightful and informative. The illustrations are accompanied by handwritten notes from the artist, and the book includes an introductory text penned by Bahamian journalist Larry Smith. Published by Singapore-based Editions Didier Millet, the book is expected to retail for approximately $30 in local stores. Editions Didier Millet, established in 1989, has published around 500 titles covering diverse subjects such as travel, history, natural history, art, architecture, cookery, and lifestyle. The book serves as an attractive coffee table book, showcasing historic buildings in central, eastern, and western districts of Nassau, including the over-the-hill areas, as well as Paradise Island, Abaco, Eleuthera, Long Island, and Cat Island. The accompanying text provides a general historical introduction along with brief commentaries on the various communities and buildings depicted. Graham Byfield, born in London, had a long career as a graphic artist and creative director for major advertising agencies like the Saatchi Group before retiring about 12 years ago to pursue painting full-time. He currently resides in Menorca, Spain, where he operates an art gallery. Over the years, Byfield has published a series of sketchbooks featuring cities and places of interest globally. His previous work on advertising campaigns, such as for Singapore Airlines, led to extensive travel in the Far East. During this time, he created prints and cards depicting Singapore's architecture, which were successfully marketed by his wife. His 'Singapore Sketchbook,' which focused on architectural conservation amidst the city's restoration efforts, became a bestseller in Asia. This success was followed by other popular sketchbooks featuring Bali, London, Oxford, and Amsterdam, all of which continue to sell well in multiple languages worldwide. The 'Bahamas Sketchbook' is the latest addition to this series, conceived after a suggestion from his cousin, Bonny Byfield, a fellow artist who has worked in Nassau since 1983. With his cousin's encouragement and logistical support, along with the collaboration of a writer and like-minded sponsors passionate about architectural conservation, the 'Bahamas Sketchbook' gradually took shape. The book is distributed by Media Enterprises, an agency founded by Larry Smith in 1984, which also distributes books. #BahamasArchitecture #VernacularArchitecture #GrahamByfield #WatercolourArt #HistoricBuildings #ArchitecturalConservation #CaribbeanArt #BookLaunch #CulturalHeritage #BahamasArchitecture #VernacularArchitecture #GrahamByfield #WatercolourArt #HistoricBuildings #ArchitecturalConservation #CaribbeanArt #BookLaunch #CulturalHeritage
