Axel Hedman-Designed PLG Limestone With Red Tile Roof, Woodwork, Mantels Asks $2.229 Million

This article features a single-family home located at 170 Maple Street in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, known for its distinctive Spanish tile roof and limestone facade. The property is part of a historic row of houses designed by architect Axel Hedman, constructed in 1909 by E. H. Bishop & Son. Suzanne Spellen of Brownstoner has previously lauded these Maple Street houses as Hedman's "finest residential row." These Neo-Renaissance-style limestones are characterized by ornamental door surrounds, metal cornices, and full-height bays, which can be rounded or angled, all capped with prominent polygonal Spanish-tile roofs. The houses were initially advertised as "two story no basement houses" requiring "only one flight of stairs for the tired housekeeper to climb." A 1910 Brooklyn Eagle article provided an extensive description of the interiors of Bishop's constructions on Maple and Midwood streets. These details included libraries featuring "cozy" built-in seats and dining rooms adorned with wainscoting and beamed ceilings, many of which remain preserved in 170 Maple Street. The interior layout of 170 Maple Street features two parlors, a dining room, and a kitchen on the main level, with four bedrooms situated upstairs. The front parlor, situated within the house's front bay, presents a bright ambiance with detailed pilasters, moldings, and a ceiling medallion. It connects to the second parlor, also serving as a library, which retains its original built-in seat, columns, and a mantel. The dining room showcases unpainted woodwork, including wainscoting and a beamed ceiling, along with a mantel and its original insert. The kitchen, located in the rear extension, has undergone a vintage-style renovation, incorporating a tin ceiling, white subway tile walls, bead board, cabinets with bin pulls, and an apron-front sink. Yellow accent tiles and pendant lights with yellow bands add a vibrant touch. The kitchen benefits from two exposures and provides direct access to the rear yard. Further interior amenities include a butler’s pantry equipped with modern built-ins and a door leading to a rear staircase. This staircase descends to a laundry room, a full bathroom, and a recreation room in the finished English basement. The basement also has a street-facing entrance. The second full bathroom is located on the bedroom floor. The bedroom level includes two large bedrooms at the front and rear, connected by a passthrough, and two smaller bedrooms. Although no images of the passthrough are provided, the floor plan indicates corner sinks and built-ins. The larger bedrooms feature mantels, picture rails, and wood floors with inlaid borders. The property includes a paved backyard, offering space for outdoor dining and planting beds along its perimeter. The house has not been on the market for several decades and is presented in excellent condition. It is listed for $2.229 million with Christina Prostano of Compass, offering a unique opportunity to acquire a well-preserved piece of historic Brooklyn architecture. #ProspectLeffertsGardens #AxelHedman #HistoricHome #BrooklynRealEstate #NeoRenaissance #ArchitecturalHistory #VintageRenovation #LuxuryHome #ProspectLeffertsGardens #AxelHedman #HistoricHome #BrooklynRealEstate #NeoRenaissance #ArchitecturalHistory #VintageRenovation #LuxuryHome
