Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 review: extra portion of flexibility

The Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 presents a compelling option in the smart doorbell market, distinguishing itself with several flexible features not commonly found in competing products. This includes the ability to choose between battery or wired power, and local or cloud storage for video recordings. The package is notably comprehensive, containing the doorbell unit, a separate chine speaker, a USB cable for the chime, six AA batteries, mounting screws and dowels, a screwdriver, and an angled back panel for flexible installation. In terms of design, the G4 boasts a high build quality and a sophisticated gray finish with subtle copper undertones, measuring 14.15 x 6.5 x 3.05 cm and weighing 540g. Its matte surface resists fingerprints. The front features two circular elements: the upper one houses the camera, an IR sensor for night vision, a motion detector, and a microphone for intercom functionality. The lower circle contains the doorbell button, which offers a satisfying tactile response. A speaker for the intercom is located on the left side, while a rubber cover on the right protects a standard Phillips screw used for mounting and removal. This standard screw design, however, raises concerns about anti-theft security, as it lacks the specialized security screws often found in similar devices. A key differentiating factor of the G4 is its flexible storage options. Video recordings can be stored locally on a microSD card (up to 512 GB) inserted into the separate chime module, or in Aqara’s cloud for free for seven days, followed by a subscription fee. Compatibility with Apple’s iCloud for HomeKit users and support for home NAS storage further enhance storage versatility. The doorbell offers dual power options: six AA batteries (included), providing up to four months of operation, or a direct power connection (8 to 24 V AC). While battery operation is convenient, continuous recording is only available with a wired connection, with battery mode triggering recordings solely upon motion detection. Installation of the G4 requires careful attention, as the included manual offers limited guidance. The back cover must be removed by loosening a side screw to access battery compartments or connect existing doorbell wires. An angled attachment is provided for installations requiring a specific viewing angle. A crucial aspect of installation is mounting height, with Aqara recommending 1.40m to 1.50m due to the camera's narrow vertical field of view. Improper height can hinder facial recognition for taller individuals. The doorbell can be adhered to a flat surface or securely mounted with screws and dowels, using the back panel as a drilling template. Setting up the doorbell via the Aqara app is straightforward, though some translations may be unclear. The app guides users through connecting the device to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Post-setup, users can fine-tune camera settings, including custom viewing zones to protect privacy, and adjust chime ringtones and warning alerts. The app also features a voice distorter for privacy during intercom use. The G4's camera provides 1080p resolution, delivering sharp images, with options to lower resolution to 720p or 360p if Wi-Fi stability is an issue. IR LEDs ensure good night vision. A standout feature is facial recognition, enabling automation possibilities with smart home systems like smart door locks. While effective, the system’s security could be compromised by a simple photo. In practical use, the core functions, including the chime and intercom, perform excellently. The G4 seamlessly integrates with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. However, using HomeKit alone may limit access to advanced camera features and facial recognition, which rely on Aqara’s proprietary AI. HomeKit integration also entails a small monthly fee for cloud storage. Displaying live feeds on devices like the Amazon Echo Show proved unreliable in testing, highlighting an area for potential improvement through updates. Ultimately, the Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 is a competitive smart doorbell offering significant flexibility in power and storage, a robust feature set including facial recognition and smart home integrations, and high-quality audio-visual performance, all at a reasonable price point. Minor drawbacks include the limited vertical field of view, the need for a specific mounting height, and the absence of a security screw for anti-theft protection. Despite these, the G4 stands out for its comprehensive offering.
