An Interior Design Expert Explains How To Style Your Windows To Make Them Look Bigger
Windows are a crucial feature in any home, influencing both interior aesthetics and occupant well-being by allowing natural light to enter. Natural light not only fosters an uplifting mood and highlights decor materials but also contributes to health by increasing serotonin levels. While not all homes can accommodate floor-to-ceiling windows, several interior design strategies can create the illusion of larger windows, enhancing a room's appearance without requiring extensive renovations. Danielle Nash, a designer and project director at Freemodel, offers insights into transforming window aesthetics to make them appear bigger through strategic styling and product choices.
One effective technique involves the careful selection of curtain fabrics and patterns. Curtains can significantly impact a window's perceived size. To create the illusion of greater height, Nash suggests using curtains with vertical patterns, which draw the eye upwards. Conversely, horizontal patterns can make windows appear wider. Lighter-colored curtains, especially those matching the wall color, can also contribute to the perception of larger windows. A common trick is to hang curtain rods higher than the window frame, extending closer to the ceiling. When employing this method, opting for thicker, more substantial fabrics is recommended, as they frame the window more professionally and avoid drawing attention to the illusion, unlike flimsy materials.
Another critical consideration is the color scheme of window frames. Painting window frames in a contrasting color to the walls can actually make windows appear smaller by outlining their exact dimensions and drawing the eye to their actual size. This principle applies regardless of the window's style or frame type. To make windows seem larger, Nash advises matching the trim color to the wall shade. This eliminates any visual border, allowing the window to appear as an extension of the wall, thereby creating the impression of increased size. If some contrast is desired, it is best to choose colors with only slight variations, avoiding stark differences between light walls and dark trim.
Furniture placement also plays a significant role in influencing the perceived size of windows. Improperly placed furniture that obstructs any part of a window can make it look smaller and block natural light, leading to a darker, more confined-feeling room. Optimal furniture arrangement should complement the window's shape. For instance, framing a long, narrow window with two armchairs placed just where the window ends can create the illusion that the window extends beyond the furniture, thereby making it appear larger. However, the general rule is to avoid blocking a substantial portion of the window with furniture.
Finally, the simplest and most cost-effective method to enhance window appearance is maintaining their cleanliness. Dirty windows draw attention to their actual size and diminish the amount of light entering the room, making them appear smaller. Clean, streak-free glass allows the outside view to seamlessly integrate with the interior, fostering a more open and expansive feel. Streaky or dust-covered windows impede light transmission, reducing the perceived size. Regular cleaning of both the interior and exterior surfaces of windows is essential for optimal results. Techniques for effective window cleaning include using glass cleaner, a dry microfiber towel to prevent lint, and a circular motion for buffing out streaks. A mixture of water and fabric softener can also be applied to help keep windows dust-free.
