A Julia Child-Worthy Pegboard and Glossy IKEA Cabinets Mingle in This Indiana Kitchen

The article details a kitchen renovation project undertaken by Domino’s deputy commerce editor, Samantha Weiss-Hills, and her husband, Alex, in their Bloomington, Indiana, home. The couple purchased their 1900s bungalow in 2017 and immediately began planning a comprehensive kitchen overhaul. Architect Andrew Heathfield provided initial mock-up plans for $5,000, and Samantha’s contractor father led the construction, saving significantly on labor costs. Storage was a critical consideration for the couple, who frequently entertain and, at the time, Samantha was testing numerous recipes and gadgets for Food52. The savings on labor allowed them to allocate more budget to key items. The renovation started with a clean slate, featuring glossy white IKEA cabinets. Samantha initially hesitated about using modern IKEA units in a historic bungalow but was convinced after hearing artist Maya Schindler praise their ease of cleaning. The IKEA units were also easily modifiable; for example, a unit near the breakfast bar was converted into a pantry. Samantha emphasized her preference for drawers over shelves for easier access to items. Cabinets in the adjacent dining room were also utilized for additional storage, housing everything from extra cookware to rarely used china and dog food, serving as a versatile "catchall." The total cost for refreshing storage in both rooms was $10,000. Appliance placement was strategically reconfigured with the addition of a kitchen island. This allowed for a more logical positioning of their new stainless steel Bosch dishwasher and a $500 Ruvati sink, which came equipped with a cutting board, garbage disposal, drying rack, and strainer. Moving these items to the island freed up space on the main wall for the refrigerator and oven, establishing an efficient work triangle in the kitchen. The only structural modification involved widening the doorway to what was formerly a guest bedroom, now serving as the dining room. Architect Heathfield collaborated with custom fabricator Central Scenic to create a sliding door made from polycarbonate and powder-coated steel. This door can separate the dining area from the kitchen, offering a flexible space that can be closed off when guests use the room for lodging. The soft-close mechanism on the door ensures quiet operation. The couple also made a significant saving on flooring, acquiring hundreds of square feet of engineered hardwood for just $200 during a local sidewalk sale. This allowed them to splurge on a Heath backsplash tile, costing $525 for 20 square feet, to introduce warmth into the bungalow-style home. Countertop selection involved a testing phase where Samantha and Alex experimented with four samples, exposing them to turmeric, coffee, and tomato paste to assess stain resistance. They ultimately chose Caesarstone’s Frozen Tundra, which cost $4,700. To provide additional counter space, they repurposed a $300 wire cubby unit by topping it with a slab of butcher block, making it a cohesive and stable extension of their workspace. A bespoke pegboard, also crafted by Central Scenic, was designed with a golden stain and a mitered edge, presenting a more refined look than standard hardware store versions. However, the custom design did not accommodate traditional peg-hook dimensions, requiring Samantha to use screw-in hooks and hammer their backs for proper adherence. Finally, meticulous attention was paid to outlet placement, with plugs strategically installed on either side of the stove for appliances like stand mixers and blenders, on the island, and at the coffee bar, enhancing functionality and convenience in the renovated kitchen. #KitchenRenovation #HomeRenovation #IKEACabinets #BeforeAndAfter #KitchenDesign #StorageSolutions #DIYRenovation #IndianaHome #PegboardStorage #KitchenRenovation #HomeRenovation #IKEACabinets #BeforeAndAfter #KitchenDesign #StorageSolutions #DIYRenovation #IndianaHome #PegboardStorage
