8 Things in Your Makeup Drawer You Should Clean or Toss Right Now

Maintaining a clean and organized makeup drawer is crucial for preventing bacteria buildup and ensuring product effectiveness. While hectic routines often lead to disarray, implementing simple habits can significantly curb clutter. The initial step in organizing a makeup drawer involves decluttering. It is advisable to separate everyday makeup from special occasion items, storing the latter in less frequently accessed areas like a linen closet to free up prime vanity drawer space. To manage product shelf life, a fine-point permanent marker can be used to note the opening date on each item, helping to track expiration and avoid guesswork. Regular decluttering sessions should be scheduled, integrating makeup drawer tidying into a broader home organization routine. Once decluttering is complete, focus shifts to cleaning or disposing of specific items. Miscellaneous items, such as errant hair ties, bobby pins, or empty contact lens packaging, should be removed and re-homed or discarded. Any trash, including used cotton swabs or ripped clothing tags, must be cleared out, especially considering that dust and hair inevitably accumulate in makeup drawers, rendering such items unsanitary for use on the face. Mascara, in particular, has a short shelf life of three months after opening to prevent eye infections, and should be replaced immediately if any eye irritation occurs. Other makeup products typically last one to two years, but any changes in smell, consistency, clumping, or oxidation indicate they are past their prime and should be discarded to avoid skin issues. Holding onto expired or unused products is counterproductive, as it occupies valuable storage space. Cleaning tools are as important as managing products. Makeup brushes, beauty blenders, and powder puffs should be cleaned weekly using brush cleansers or baby shampoo to prevent bacterial growth and breakouts. Other tools like tweezers, eyelash curlers, and brow spatulas, which come into contact with the skin, require frequent cleaning and sanitization after every use. This can be achieved by wiping them down with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, followed by rinsing with water and air-drying. For an extra layer of sanitation, tweezers and eyelash curlers can be soaked in boiling water before cleaning. Messy makeup packaging, common due to powders and liquids, needs regular attention. Wiping down bottles and palettes with a makeup remover wipe or damp paper towel as soon as spills are noticed helps prevent spreading and waste. Even shattered or broken powder products can often be salvaged by mixing them with rubbing alcohol to form a paste and reshaping them in their compact. Finally, the drawer itself and any organizers within it should not be overlooked. After emptying the drawer, use a handheld vacuum or lint roller to remove debris, then wipe it down with a damp cloth. Individual organizers, preferably made from recycled plastic or acrylic, are recommended as they provide an extra barrier against stains and simplify the process of sorting and arranging products, ultimately saving time during daily routines. These organizers should always be hand-washed to prevent warping. #MakeupOrganization #BeautyRoutine #HomeCleaning #DeclutteringTips #Hygiene #ProductExpiration #BeautyTools #MakeupOrganization #BeautyRoutine #HomeCleaning #DeclutteringTips #Hygiene #ProductExpiration #BeautyTools
