LadyGang's Keltie Knight Has a Circular Living Room—and It Totally Works
The article delves into how designer Dane Austin transformed a potentially cold and unwelcoming open-concept great room, featuring 22-foot ceilings and wraparound windows, into an inviting communal area for House Beautiful's 2024 Whole Home. Austin drew inspiration from the natural surroundings of Asheville, particularly a sunset with shades of lavender, pink, and rose, which influenced the color palette and overall design. A key element of his design was the selection of a Farrow & Ball cherry blossom pattern wallcovering, inspired by a Renaissance-era chateau design. To add depth and dimension to the room, Austin collaborated with the build team to incorporate a floor-to-ceiling chimney breast made from Dekton’s ultra-compact surface material. A surrealist "sculptural landscape" by local artist Colton Dion served as a focal point.
Austin's approach to furnishing the space involved drawing inspiration from various eras, aiming for a collected-over-time aesthetic that blends old and new, masculine and feminine elements, including custom-made pieces and flea market finds. The room incorporates a variety of textures such as velvets, supple leathers, and linens, along with diverse seating options. Austin emphasized the importance of a living room being able to accommodate as many people as the dining room, especially for a holiday house, ensuring ample seating for post-dinner socialization.
For the living room, Austin introduced a shelf along the length of the room, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Selvedge color, to display baskets and pottery, preventing the wallcovering from extending all the way to the rafters. The living room features upholstery from Lee Industries, Harlequin fabric for ottomans and pillows, Stroheim drapery, Wayfair Professional case goods, and Visual Comfort & Co. lighting. Thoughtful details include custom brass inserts by Architectural Grille on cabinetry flanking the fireplace, mirroring the wallpaper motif. A Samsung Frame TV is seamlessly integrated, displaying artwork when not in use. A custom Fibreworks rug defines the expansive space, while distinct lighting choices, such as a Clementine chandelier by Visual Comfort & Co. for the lounge and a Mollino pendant over the dining table, help differentiate the living and dining areas.
The informal dining area, situated adjacent to the kitchen, is furnished with a settee and chairs from Lee Industries and a table from Wayfair Professional. It also features the Adelaïde wallpaper from Farrow & Ball, a Fibreworks rug, and lighting from Visual Comfort & Co. Artwork by Colton Dion and accessories from Minted further enhance the space. To create a sense of intimacy and privacy in the open-concept layout, Austin implemented a "room-within-a-room" concept using drapery made from Sanderson fabric. This fabric, with its crewel stitchwork in blush and blue hues, complements the room's color scheme and softens the angular architecture, allowing the kitchen area to be cordoned off when desired, particularly for privacy after large gatherings. #InteriorDesign #OpenConceptLiving #HomeDecor #DaneAustinDesign #HouseBeautiful #WholeHome2024 #LuxuryInteriors #ArchitecturalFeatures #FurnitureSelection
