Ulysse Nardin Reveals The Freak One Navy Blue
Ulysse Nardin has introduced the Freak One Navy Blue, an advanced iteration of its iconic Freak series, known for its unconventional approach to watchmaking. The original Freak, launched in 2001, pioneered a design that eliminated the traditional dial, hands, and crown, instead utilizing the watch's movement to indicate time. This innovative concept is maintained in the Freak One Navy Blue, where a large silicon oscillator and balance spring function as the minute hand, and a rotating disc beneath the movement displays the hour. This unique construction highlights the watch's mechanical complexity and offers a dynamic visual experience.
The Freak One Navy Blue features a 44mm case made from black DLC-coated titanium, ensuring both strength and lightness. A notable material choice for the bezel is Carbonium, a sustainable carbon fiber composite originally developed for aviation and first incorporated into watchmaking by Ulysse Nardin in 2019. The Carbonium bezel's distinct organic pattern adds visual interest and texture to the watch's overall aesthetic.
The timepiece is powered by Ulysse Nardin’s in-house UN-240 Manufacture movement, an automatic caliber that boasts a 90-hour power reserve. This movement integrates the brand’s innovative Grinder winding system, designed for efficient energy transfer. To enhance durability and precision, critical components such as the escapement wheel and anchor are treated with DiamonSil, a proprietary material combining silicon with synthetic diamond.
For improved readability in low-light conditions, the hour markers and indicators are coated with blue Super-LumiNova. The watch's intricate movement is visible through a sapphire crystal caseback, which is framed by black DLC-coated titanium, further emphasizing its mechanical artistry. The Freak One Navy Blue is offered with two strap options, both made from 30% recycled production waste: a blue ballistic-textured rubber strap and a two-tone rubber strap, underscoring the brand's commitment to sustainability.
Priced at 66,800 USD, the Freak One Navy Blue represents a continuation of Ulysse Nardin’s tradition of marine chronometry while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of contemporary horological design and engineering. This model integrates advanced materials and innovative mechanics into a visually striking and technically sophisticated timepiece.
