5 top island bench trends in 2022
Island benches are a central feature in modern kitchens, serving as a focal point for design, food preparation, storage, and seating. To ensure an island bench remains current and functional, several trends are shaping their design in 2022. Monique Parker from kaboodle kitchen outlines these trends, offering insights into how homeowners can integrate them into their kitchens.
One significant trend is transforming the island bench into an entertainer’s delight. This involves designing the benchtop to accommodate guests, allowing them to gather around while food is being prepared. The inclusion of comfortable bar stools beneath an overhanging benchtop encourages social interaction, making the kitchen a more engaging space for entertaining.
Another emerging trend is the use of terrazzola, a laminate benchtop solution that mimics the aesthetic of traditional terrazzo without the high cost. This material introduces character through its timeless design and tactile qualities. According to trend forecaster Scarlet Opus, there is a growing desire for surfaces that offer a textural impression while being smooth to the touch, fulfilling a need for tactility in contemporary design. Materials that replicate natural elements such as stone, terrazzo, marble, concrete, and timber are increasingly being incorporated into kitchen designs to create a luxurious ambiance.
Multi-purpose storage is also a key consideration for island benches. Parker suggests innovative solutions such as placing two base cabinets back-to-back to create storage on both sides of the island. Open shelving, created using cut-down benchtops or panels, provides additional storage and acts as a design feature. These shelves can display items like cookbooks and vases, adding visual interest and personality to the kitchen while helping to minimize clutter on the main benchtops, thereby maximizing preparation space.
Warm timber tones are another popular trend, enhancing indoor-outdoor connections and contributing to a relaxed Scandinavian aesthetic. Timber-look benchtops, such as kaboodle’s hazelnut laminate, introduce textural warmth and a raw, natural character to kitchen spaces. This trend is driven by the desire for authentic textures that evoke a sense of peace. Unlike real timber, laminate alternatives require minimal maintenance, eliminating the need for regular oiling or sanding while still delivering the desired style and warmth.
Finally, integrating a space-savvy sink into the island bench maximizes functionality, particularly when ample preparation space is available. An in-bench sink facilitates interaction with family and friends during meal preparation or clean-up. A variety of sink finishes, including matte black for industrial styles and chrome for timeless appeal, allows for customization to suit different kitchen aesthetics. These trends collectively aim to make island benches more versatile, stylish, and integral to the modern home.
