This will include developing innovative design concepts, creating digital models and renderings, selecting finishes, preparing design documentation, and conducting design presentations. Turner expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with a diverse network of professionals and contributing to a team focused on pushing design boundaries to create impactful spaces.
Turner credits High Point University for providing her with the confidence and skills necessary for this opportunity. She highlights the excellence of the design program, emphasizing the instant industry connections and real-world experience gained through HPU's proximity to the High Point Market, a major hub in the furniture industry. The supportive environment and dedicated faculty at HPU played a significant role in her development as both a designer and a professional. Her experience also includes studying abroad in Florence, Italy, which she states profoundly influenced her perspective on design and life. This international exposure broadened her horizons and provided a new lens through which to view the world.
Brandon Jones, an Instructor of Home Furnishings and Interior Design at HPU, is identified by Turner as her most impactful mentor. She commends Jones for his exceptional teaching, particularly in technical design programs crucial to her field. Beyond instruction, Jones provided invaluable guidance during the job application process, sharing his industry experiences and insights into hiring. Turner appreciates his genuine commitment to student success. She considers receiving her job offers as the most impactful moment at HPU, viewing it as a validation of her hard work and dedication. She notes that her success in securing a position with a global design firm was beyond her expectations when she started at HPU, attributing it to the comprehensive preparation and support received.
Turner explains that HPU's inspiring environment fostered her confidence and work ethic. Being surrounded by driven students and faculty motivated her to strive for excellence and develop essential skills. She believes this environment, which promotes high expectations and exposure to successful individuals, distinguishes HPU and effectively prepares students for professional success. The most significant life skill she acquired at HPU was professionalism, which she believes was frequently recognized during her interviews. She attributes her strong communication and presentation skills to the high standards set by the university. Additionally, HPU instilled values of leadership, resilience, and ambition, which she intends to carry forward in her career.
For underclassmen, Turner advises embracing all opportunities offered by HPU, including speakers, success networks, clubs, and new experiences, recognizing that undergraduate years pass quickly. She emphasizes the importance of making the most of these opportunities, not dwelling on minor issues, and trusting that experiences unfold for a reason. She cherishes her four years at HPU for shaping her into the professional she is today.
