Ultra-luxury and brooding menace combine in Rolls-Royce’s new Ghost Black Badge
The Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge represents a unique offering in the luxury car market, diverging from the traditional focus on overt performance to emphasize style, mystery, and a subtle sense of menace. Introduced in 2016, the Black Badge series caters to a growing demographic of younger, self-driving Rolls-Royce owners who seek a more distinctive and less conventional expression of luxury. This specific model, the Ghost Black Badge, joins existing Black Badge versions of the Cullinan, Wraith, and Dawn, solidifying its place in Rolls-Royce's special designation for enhanced, high-spec models.
While Rolls-Royce is known for its discretion regarding technical specifications, the Black Badge models do receive performance enhancements. This includes an increase in power and torque, alongside a 'Low' mode that optimizes gear holding for a slightly louder exhaust note. The handling and suspension are also sharpened, though the vehicle retains its character as a luxury cruiser rather than a sports car. Despite impressive acceleration capabilities, the primary appeal of the Black Badge lies in its aesthetic and experiential qualities.
The inspiration for the Black Badge aesthetic can be traced back to bespoke Rolls-Royce models from the past, characterized by sober, all-black color schemes. Notable examples include a 1933 Phantom II Continental and a 1960 Phantom V owned by the Duke of Gloucester, which pioneered the use of matte and gloss black combinations. Even John Lennon's blacked-out Phantom V in the 1960s, despite later being famously re-painted in a psychedelic style, showcased an early inclination towards a darker, more understated luxury that extended even to black chrome trim.
The Black Badge's appeal is particularly strong among the super-rich, where gloss and matte black finishes are becoming prevalent across various luxury items, from superyachts to wristwatches. This trend reflects a desire for a 'neo-Mephistophelian' or 'Succession-esque' image, as described by a Rolls-Royce spokesperson, signifying a shift from traditional luxury to a more enigmatic and powerful persona. The series was also developed to counteract the proliferation of aftermarket accessories that could compromise the purity of the original designs.
Black Badge models now constitute over a quarter of Rolls-Royce's annual sales, indicating a significant segment of their clientele gravitates towards this particular aesthetic. The exterior treatment minimizes brightwork, featuring a deep black paintwork meticulously hand-polished to a reflective, liquid-like finish. This dark exterior can be dramatically contrasted with a vibrant palette of interior colors, accented by gloss carbon-fiber weave and dark metals. Additional flashes of color appear in the painted coach line and brake calipers. The design philosophy, while described as 'post-opulent' by designer Henry Cloke, still conveys a strong sense of luxury and, depending on the context, can project a menacing aura.
Driving the Ghost Black Badge offers a serene experience, insulated from external disturbances, with interior features like the starlight headliner and deco-esque instruments contributing to the luxurious ambiance. The V12 engine operates with remarkable quietness, and while powerful, encourages a stately rather than aggressive driving style. Looking to the future, the Ghost is anticipated to be one of the last conventionally powered Rolls-Royce models. The company has announced its first pure EV, the Spectre, for production in 2023, with electric versions of other models, including the Phantom, expected to follow. Rolls-Royce plans to continue offering Black Badge versions of these electric vehicles, promising an era of 'truly stealth wealth' with their near-silent operation, especially when driven at night.
