Want to make a statement in the kitchen? Get a cherry red oven.
The article focuses on a kitchen renovation project in a midcentury ski chalet in New Hampshire's White Mountains, undertaken by Heart & Hammer Homes founders Hannah and Cody Guilford. The original kitchen was characterized by extensive wood elements, a feature the designers aimed to move away from while still incorporating wood in a refreshed manner. The renovation centered on creating a vibrant and functional space, with a key design element being a cherry red oven and matching hood.
Hannah Guilford spearheaded the design choices, opting for white paint on the walls and ceiling to brighten the space and provide a contrasting backdrop. Streamlined cabinetry in a wood veneer was chosen to offer a rustic feel without overwhelming the kitchen with wood. The red range and hood were deliberately selected to introduce a bold "wow factor," reflecting the homeowners' preference for the color red.
The design incorporates several thoughtful details. Scandinavian-style stools with low, rounded backs were used to introduce a lighthearted element and soften the room's hard edges, contributing to a cozy atmosphere with the potential for furry throws. Black quartz countertops, chosen for their resemblance to soapstone, were installed to ground the tall kitchen space. These countertops feature subtle white crackles, which Hannah Guilford notes evoke the appearance of frozen ice on a nearby river, adding an earthy yet clean and crisp aesthetic due to their thin profile.
Lighting fixtures were also carefully considered. Pared-down pendant lights maintain the overall simplicity of the design while adding black accents to the upper portion of the room. The milky-glass globes of these pendants are described as resembling "little snowballs." A large, distinct sconce positioned over the window adds visual interest by playing with scale. The cabinetry balances the existing honey-toned window trim with the dark wood ceiling beams, featuring amber and deeper tones in its graining. Warm gray-glass backsplash tiles, stacked vertically, were chosen to echo the lines of the slatted ceiling and draw the eye upwards towards the original wood beams. The ZLINE stainless steel range with its glossy red door and matching hood serves as a classic, functional focal point, intentionally sized at 30 inches wide to avoid overpowering the room.
