This Monochrome Entryway Built-In Is Actually a Kitchen Cabinet

Rashida Banks, a content creator based in Washington, D.C., transformed her 4-by-4-foot entryway from a dim, cramped, and non-functional space into a well-organized and aesthetically pleasing area. Before the renovation, the entryway's small coat closet offered minimal storage, leading Banks to leave her belongings scattered throughout the house. Her goal was to create not only more storage but also a design that integrated seamlessly with the rest of her home's curated style. The renovation involved a clever and unconventional use of a standard 30-inch-wide kitchen cabinet. Banks slid this cabinet into the existing entryway alcove, which was 32 inches wide, filling the minor gaps with extra molding to create the appearance of a custom built-in unit. To prevent the cabinet from looking like a kitchen extension, she opted for a butcher block shelf instead of traditional kitchen counter materials like tile or stone. This design choice provided ample storage in the lower half of the closet, which was previously lacking, allowing for the organization of scarves and other small items in the top two drawers or on wall hooks, while still preserving space for coats overhead. An ingenious element of the renovation was the faux vintage glass closet door. Banks revealed that the door was constructed from corrugated plastic roofing, a cost-effective alternative to actual glass. This material, typically used for greenhouses, was cut to size and purchased from a local hardware store for approximately $20, avoiding both high costs and long lead times. The entire built-in, including the walls and drawers, was then painted with Benjamin Moore’s Heather Gray, creating a cohesive and custom monochrome look. Beyond general storage, the redesign also addressed a specific functional need: feeding her two dogs, Jax and Chase. Banks realized that the entryway had become the unexpected feeding spot, necessitating a more integrated solution. The new built-in includes a baseboard drawer designed to hide two dog bowls, and a larger drawer above it for storing dog food and treats. This thoughtful inclusion of pet-specific storage eliminated the need to transport kibble bags from the kitchen and back, making the daily routine more efficient. Despite the various additions, the renovation did not compromise existing storage space; instead, it optimized the area, making it a functional and organized hub for the household, including a dedicated 'junk drawer.' #EntrywayRenovation #DIYHomeDecor #SmallSpaceSolutions #KitchenCabinetHack #HomeOrganization #BeforeAndAfter #InteriorDesign #MonochromeDesign #PetFriendlyHome #EntrywayRenovation #DIYHomeDecor #SmallSpaceSolutions #KitchenCabinetHack #HomeOrganization #BeforeAndAfter #InteriorDesign #MonochromeDesign #PetFriendlyHome
