Before & After: Dated ’80s Oak Kitchen Cabinets Get a “Charming” Rustic Farmhouse Makeover

Danielle Herrett, an avid DIYer and owner of an 80s-built home, undertook a significant renovation of her kitchen, which was characterized by its dated oak cabinets, fluorescent lighting, and an impractical layout featuring a small peninsula and limited counter space. The renovation aimed to transform the kitchen into a rustic farmhouse-style space, emphasizing charm and functionality. Herrett’s approach involved a blend of strategic demolition, a creative use of paint, and the incorporation of unique, repurposed elements. The initial phase of the remodel began with a major structural change: removing a wall that separated the kitchen from a dining room. This opened up the space, making it feel larger and more integrated with the rest of the home. The existing oak cabinets, which were a defining feature of the 80s aesthetic, were not replaced entirely but rather repurposed and refinished. The layout was reconfigured, and the cabinets were painted in Sherwin-Williams’s “Alabaster White.” This neutral, warm white instantly brightened the space and provided a fresh canvas for the farmhouse theme. Instead of a traditional kitchen island, Herrett opted for an antique map chest, which served as a unique and functional centerpiece, offering ample storage with its long drawers. Further enhancements included the installation of new quartz countertops, complementing the white cabinetry and enhancing the bright aesthetic. The trim was painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Edgecomb Gray,” providing a subtle contrast and adding to the overall cohesive design. To reinforce the rustic farmhouse style, shiplap was added to the walls, introducing texture and a classic country feel. The existing floor tiles were painted white to seamlessly integrate with the new color scheme, contributing to a clean and expanded look. A new farmhouse-style sink and a replacement kitchen window were also incorporated, improving both the aesthetic and practical aspects of the kitchen. However, the renovation encountered an unexpected setback when a plumbing issue arose, leading to water damage that necessitated replacing the subfloor. This unforeseen challenge required a pause in the renovation and additional repairs. Despite this, Herrett successfully navigated the issue, demonstrating resilience in her DIY journey. Once the plumbing and subfloor issues were resolved, the final touches were added, including a wooden range hood, open shelving, and custom-designed pantry doors created by Herrett's husband. These elements further personalized the kitchen, adding both style and practical storage solutions. The finished kitchen reflects a carefully curated blend of old and new, achieving the desired rustic farmhouse aesthetic. Herrett expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting that the space now feels “old, charming, and lived-in,” despite being a recent renovation. This project serves as an example of how strategic DIY efforts, even when faced with unexpected challenges, can lead to a transformed and beloved home space, emphasizing personal style and enhanced functionality. #KitchenRenovation #DIYHomeDecor #RusticFarmhouseStyle #BeforeAndAfter #OakCabinets #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel #KitchenRenovation #DIYHomeDecor #RusticFarmhouseStyle #BeforeAndAfter #OakCabinets #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel
