2020 Best Powder Rooms
This article highlights the top powder room designs recognized in the 2020 Kitchen & Bath Design Awards. Three distinct projects are featured, showcasing innovative approaches to space constraints, aesthetic challenges, and client preferences.
The Gold award was presented to Sandra Diaz-Velasco of Eolo A&I Design, Inc. for her "Minimalist Elegance" powder room in a state home in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The design aimed to be a visually distinct 'hidden gem' while complementing the home's eclectic style. Diaz-Velasco addressed challenges such as low ceilings, a small footprint, and an awkwardly placed window. She resolved these by adjusting the ceiling height, strategically hanging a vanity mirror in front of the window, and incorporating a custom floating vanity with a glass countertop, alongside a wall-hung Duravit toilet. These elements contributed to a sense of lightness and spaciousness in the compact area, fulfilling the client's desire for a unique and elegant space.
The Silver award went to Eddie Leverett Jr. of ONE eleven ltd. for his "Small Spa" powder room in Las Vegas, NV. The homeowners sought to transform their dated and "toilet-focused" space into a private, spa-like retreat. Leverett Jr. undertook a significant renovation, relocating the plumbing to the west wall. This change shifted the focus away from the toilet and allowed for the creation of a prominent vanity feature wall. This wall included a Schenk Mesa Select Tobacco Halifax Oak floating vanity, an Arizona Tile Opal White countertop, a Whitehaus Isabella Plus vitreous china vessel sink, and a matte black Zura faucet from Delta Faucet Co. The design was further enhanced by a chevron-patterned marble backsplash and an ornate marble-and-wood patterned porcelain tile floor, delivering a luxurious and spa-inspired ambiance.
Patricia Davis Brown of PDB Designs, LLC received the Bronze award for her "Fresh and Floral" powder room, designed for a model home in a new luxury coastal development in Vero Beach, FL. The objective was to create a memorable and balanced space within a small, high-ceilinged room. Brown achieved this by using a cheerful patterned wallpaper, which added a vibrant aesthetic and visual balance. Coral Stone countertops and flooring were chosen to integrate with the coastal theme prevalent throughout the model home. Custom hardware by Lisa Jarvis, featuring a floral burst motif, echoed the wallpaper's design. Additionally, the design incorporated several green elements to enhance sustainability, including a water-saving, low-flow DXV toilet, LED lighting, and a DXV sink paired with a Grohe EcoJoy faucet, significantly reducing water consumption. These design choices collectively created a fresh, inviting, and environmentally conscious powder room.
