A 1,054 sq ft BTO flat that looks like a retro American diner – with a jukebox

Homeowners Henry and Joy, inspired by Hollywood movies, American pop art, and pop culture, transformed their new 1,054 sq ft four-room HDB BTO flat in Punggol into a retro American diner-themed space. The couple aimed for a friendly, flashy, retro Americana look while ensuring the home remained cozy for entertaining friends. Interior designer Raymond Seow of Free Space Intent was enlisted to bring this vision to life, opting for a darker, more masculine aesthetic to create a snug environment suitable for gatherings. The entire apartment's flooring was unified with dark grey marble-look tiles, establishing a consistent and cohesive base. Most walls in the living and dining areas, along with the corridor leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms, were covered in exposed red brick, evoking an industrial New York ambiance. The remaining walls were finished with smooth cement screed, providing a visual contrast to the brickwork. Black track lighting and ceiling fans were installed throughout to maintain consistency. This design scheme created a warm and inviting backdrop for the couple’s collection of pop art-inspired decor. The most striking feature is a large 1950s-inspired jukebox positioned between the living and dining areas. Its substantial size, glossy curves, and built-in color-changing light tube create a playful party atmosphere, setting the overall theme for the home and offering an interactive way to enjoy music. Inspired by the jukebox's dynamic lighting, the interior designer incorporated color-changing lights throughout the entire flat, extending to the kitchen and bathrooms, to achieve a consistent "mini club" ambiance at night. The living area, with its brick-clad walls, functions as an informal and cozy space. A large Warhol-esque artwork depicting Marilyn Monroe in various colors serves as a focal point. A retro-futuristic blue leather sofa is adorned with cushions featuring pop art images of soft drink and soup cans. Opposite, a large flat-screen TV rests on a long, clean-lined TV console with a rustic-industrial wooden-plank finish. An industrial metal rolling cart acts as a coffee table, complemented by accessories like a lava lamp and a clock with an American pin-up girl motif. To enhance the sense of space, the wall between the kitchen and dining area was removed, creating an open kitchen with a bar/dining counter reminiscent of an American diner. Bright red bar chairs add a vibrant touch, and a steel service bell on the counter further reinforces the theme. A row of framed Star Wars movie posters hangs on the wall beside the dining counter. The designer cleverly incorporated a black steel-framed glass door and matching half-height bi-fold windows for the kitchen, allowing it to be closed off during heavy cooking. The kitchen, which connects to a service yard and laundry area, was kept simple with plain white countertops, a glass backsplash, and wood-look cabinetry, avoiding overly bright 50s-themed finishes. Subtle 50s-styled accessories like a radio and coffeemaker contribute to the theme, while the concealed color-changing lights adjust the mood. The master bedroom maintains a minimal design with a restful color palette of muted khaki walls, white ceilings, a black bed with a tufted headboard, and deep wood-toned wardrobe cabinetry. A large Lichtenstein-style graphic artwork of a kissing couple above the bed adds a retro-pop and romantic element. The other bedroom, repurposed as a home office, is sparsely furnished with a work desk, an office chair, and an industrial metal shelving unit. The two bathrooms deviate from the retro 50s American theme, resembling a spa with earthy tones, pebble-dashed walls or stone and rattan-weave tiles, and wash basins carved from stone or wood. However, they integrate the jukebox-inspired color-changing lighting, allowing owners to create a resort-like, cozy spa ambiance. #homeRenovation #BTOFlat #americanDinerTheme #retroDesign #interiorDesign #jukebox #popArt #HDBFlat #spaceTransformation #homeRenovation #BTOFlat #americanDinerTheme #retroDesign #interiorDesign #jukebox #popArt #HDBFlat #spaceTransformation
