Build-your-own birdhouses can be as simple or elaborate as you want
The construction of birdhouses offers a practical way to support avian wildlife, especially in urban and suburban areas where natural nesting cavities are often scarce. These structures, ranging from simple to elaborate designs, can provide essential shelter for birds such as chickadees, tufted titmice, and bluebirds. Stephen Kress, vice president for bird conservation at the National Audubon Society, highlights that birds are primarily attracted to the entrance hole of a suitable size during nesting season. While commercially available birdhouses can be expensive, building one from scratch is an affordable alternative, typically costing between $5 and $10 in materials. Michael Warriner, an information officer at the Arkansas National Heritage Commission, emphasizes the ease of construction, stating that a basic birdhouse only requires four walls, a roof, and a bottom.
The initial step in birdhouse construction involves determining the target bird species, as this dictates the size of the house and the entrance hole. Barb Pederson and her husband, for instance, researched various bird types to create 14 custom birdhouses as Christmas gifts. They used cedar wood, customizing each with different themes and attaching cards with information on the bird species it was designed for, along with mounting instructions. For materials, untreated wood is recommended, with cedar, cypress, or fir being more durable than pine or maple. Metal should be avoided due to heat retention. Essential tools include a saw, sandpaper, screwdriver, hammer, and drill for the entrance hole. Galvanized nails and wood glue are also useful.
Key design considerations for a functional birdhouse include walls approximately ¾ inch thick. If the interior wood is smooth, scoring or roughing it up is advisable to help baby birds climb out. A hinged or pivoting side or bottom is necessary for easy cleaning. The roof should be sloped for water drainage, and the entrance hole should be positioned two-thirds up from the bottom to deter predators and prevent nest obstruction. Perches are not essential for bird safety. Adequate drainage, via small holes in the floor corners, and ventilation at the top are also crucial. Kress suggests that minor cracks in the roof are acceptable for ventilation.
To protect against predators, especially squirrels, predator guards such as an additional piece of wood with a matching hole or a thin metal plate can be added around the entrance. While birds do not require decorative elements, painting the exterior can add a personal touch for the builder. Alternatives to wooden birdhouses include natural gourds and recycled plastic containers. Regardless of the material, birdhouses should be mounted at least 4 feet off the ground. In northern regions, an east-facing orientation helps warm the house earlier in spring. Beyond birdhouses, attracting birds can be further achieved by landscaping with native plants, minimizing manicured lawns, and avoiding chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
For those interested in observing nesting birds more closely, a nesting shelf—an open structure with a floor and roof—can be installed. This allows for direct viewing of eggs and chicks. Resources for birdhouse construction and bird attraction include the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which offer plans and pamphlets. When mounting, a metal pole is preferable to a tree for predator deterrence. Limiting birdhouse density to four small ones or one large one per acre is recommended. The time required for construction varies based on skill and complexity, but a basic house can be completed in a few hours.
